It's that time again - a chance for pilots to challenge themselves (and - who are we kidding - each other, a little) in the qualification run to earn the coveted "Expert" badges in piloting, gunnery and (for ECOs) electronic warfare. With half the squadron scattered on shore leave or home leave and some still on duty, it's only part of the squad out here tonight.

They've set out target buoys for the gunnery portion of the trials, and an obstacle course for the piloting part - culminating in a combat landing on the flight deck of Galactica. After their turn, they would take back off and rejoin the squadron.

Stirling is in her Raptor. "I hear there were a couple perfect scores last time," the CAG's voice comes over the comms. "No pressure, right? Nova, you want to start things off?"

"Just a walk in the park, Nova. Ya can do this in yer sleep as many missions I've seen ya on." Mason offers encouragingly to her as he slowly floats his Viper in place to polietly queue up to wait his turn.

The peanut gallery is here! Alain has no need to qualify, but he wouldn't miss this opportunity to cheer on his fellow pilots -- plus an opportunity to get back into the pilot seat after his leave to Gemenon is more than welcome. He settles into a place slightly below and to the right of Stirling's raptor, where he has a good view of the course. "Whisper, Jigger. Any chance of a second bottle of ambrosia if we take another shot at it?" he's laughing even as it says it, knowing how unlikely that is. "Good luck, Nova!" he adds.

Aubrey has been uncharacteristically silent on the comms today. Possibly due to the miserable hangover she has. She settles into the formation, watching quietly.

Eva, having come up from the planet to support her fellow pilots, is stable on the side of the course opposite Stirling and Jigger, waisting at the outskirts to watch the qualification flights and provide assistance or encouragement as she can.

When Astraea showed up, in flightsuit, she largely kept to herself. The young pilot affixed her helmet before she'd even made it to her Raptor; avoiding looking directly at anyone. She passed her qualifications in a last minute run at them as she was transferred aboard the Vanguard right before it shipped out from Scorpia last time they were done. When her name is called, she's silent for a few long seconds. No pressure, indeed. Particularly at mentioned of no pressure. Well, shit. "Copy, Whisper." The Raptor is drawn up a bit to align with those buoys as she aims out ahead of the others in the pack.

Emrys is here, this being his first chance to do quals with the Colonial Forces. As tends to be the case, he talks very little on the comms unless directly addressed.

Calliope is here in her flight suit, to try her hand at another round of qualifications. She's wearing her basic piloting badge, but lacks a gunnery one. She idles, waiting her turn and watching Astraea's run.

Double-Tap is in the house. Well, not exactly in The House as much as he's in a Raptor. He's strapped up and prepped to do his ECO thing because it's time to kick some other ECO Bootay and get the High Score on this Game. There are so many Achievements that need to be Unlocked that he can't even. Can't. Even. There's no witty banter or any slick remarks this time because he's all about the focus mode. He has to get his mind right before his turn and thus the fueling of his mind with some slick BGM is happening right now too.

Jackson has been looking forward to this for days, racking up some training sim hours and generally trying to get sharp. Like Aubrey he's pretty quiet right now.

Stirling smiles, though of course nobody can see it. "Depends, Jigger. What do I get if you fail?" Seeing Astraea's performance, she says, "Nice job, Nova. Take it on over to the shooting range and let Double Tap do his thing, then we can switch."

Jigger seems momentarily taken aback by the answer from the CAG, to judge by the brief pause, "Uh. I'll do your paperwork for a day?" because clearly a day's worth of CAG paperwork is serious business. "On second thought, I don't think I'll test the Gods' sense of humor today," he adds, wryly. "Nice work, Nova!"

Aubrey toggles the comm and murmurs, "You shouldn't take that bet, Jigs, with your betting track record."

Maybe Astraea is still hoping for some Good News on that whole potentially doing some Viper training on the side. Which means showing off for the CAG on top of doing her qualifications. Sure, she's a talented Raptor pilot and the CF won't want to let that go, but a girl can dream. So as they run through the course so Double-Tap can do his thing, she is focused. The Raptor frame is not meant for acrobatics, but she's trying, damnit.

There's a moment where Double-Tap, he prefers to stay Double-Tap more than Yohan for some reason, closes his eyes for a little bit more focus while the Raptor is headed for the shooting gallery. "Alright, Clank Yankers." That's right, Double-Tap is making up slurs for Cylons. WTF. "Game on." His personal pep talk of gamertude kicks in when the Raptor's ready to rock and roll. Double-Tap gets down with the Turret of KEW and shifts into Triple-Tap mode when it comes time to Raspberry some simulated foolios with the ECM quickness. Yeah, Double-Tap says Raspberry instead of jam. For reasons. For hilarity. For Libranaria!

Isolde is in the backseat of Calliope's Raptor, suited up in her flightsuit. She's taped down the ring finger of her left glove, clearly indicating where her missing digit lies. She rubs slightly at her four-fingered hand as they wait their turn to run the course. She glances over toward the front of the Raptor. "You ready for this, Bite?"

There are echoes of a chuckle in Stirling's voice when she replies to Jigger. "Far be it from me to stand in the way of extra training, Jigger. But you'll have to content yourself with pleasing your legions of fans. My pockets aren't as deep as the Colonel's." Her eyebrows go up at the ECO's performance. "Perfect score on both. Nice one, Double-Tap. Setting the bar high. You and Nova can trade places."

Jackson laughs as Yohan massacres the training camp. "Looks like you just made yourself the most sought after ECO in the navy Double-Tap."

"Hey, it's only you I keep losing to, Banshee," Jigger replies, with a low laugh. "Understood, Whisper. I'm sure the Colonel'll be up for it. If he is, it sounds like Double-Tap just scored himself a bottle. Nice shooting!"

"Yeah well, maybe that's telling you something, Jigger," Banshee replies, though she doesn't elaborate.

Calliope turns her head to shoot a quick grin back at Isolde. "Totally." She sounds all of peppy confidence. Some of it might be genuine. "You'll do stellar, Pi. Just keep your hands loose and remember: you are frakking solid against actual toasters. So an obstacle course isn't that bad." Her attention then goes back to Yohan and Astraea's run, letting out a low whistle at the work he wrecks on the course.

"Nice work," Astraea offers to Double-Tap as they finish their initial run. But then it's time to switch spots. They land and the engine is left running as she moves back to the ECO station and leaves him to the pilot's seat. She hesitates for a time before settling in. It's a foreign spot. Very much so. She doesn't like it one bit, even. It's claustrophobic and just... not right. Her fingers even twitch once she's there. She knows what she's doing, yes, but it's all... wrong. "...Just glad I ain't made any bets on this one."

"Just focus on your task, Nova. Hell, frak thinkin' of them as toasters. Got somethin' ya don't like more you want to think about?" Mason offers to Nova over the comms.

Still, no words from Eva, her viper idling in the space far between two of the target obstacles. A shimmy of her wings, here or there, as the birds pass her, but she's happy to remain in the background.

"No pressure," Isolde almost squeaks when she sees how well Yohan does. Then she flashes a grin toward Calliope. "My biggest thing is not letting my fingers go all ghost on me. It's like I've got a permanent haunting in my hand." Though she sounds upbeat, there is a shy worry in her voice at the depths. Then she looks over her readouts as the Double-Tap + Nova Show starts in on the piloting course.

Emrys keeps silent on the comms. There will be time for congratulations later, right now the less chatter the better for those trying to focus on the qualifying course.

"This is all you, Nova." Double-Tap gets comfy in the Pilot seat and prepares to do that dang thing. He's done quite a few flight sims in his day and he's played a heck of a lot of Sky Rim and that game is fun as frak. So while he's offering some choice words to the uncomfortable one. "Trust The Fungus." Whatever in the hell that's supposed to mean. He's really got to stop using gamer terminology on these people. Either way, Double-Tap gets that Raptor going so that Nova can get them points! Goooo Raptor Team!

"Nice job Nova, Double-Tap," Stirling says. "Jar, you're up next."

Calliope manages a laugh at Isolde's attempt at a joke about her hand. "You'll do awesome!" She projects like a cheerleader. Offering a, "Sweet job, guys!" Over the comm line to Astraea and Yohan, then settling in to watch Mason's run.

"Nova, Dee-Tee, Jar. Nice shootin' and flyin', ya two." Mason offers before his name's called and he brings the Viper out of idle. "Alright, just like flying around the windturbines back home." he comments as he starts to set up into position on course to wait for Stirling. "On yer mark, Whisper."

Don't think about the lack of a view. Don't think about how someone else is at the controls. Don't think about that. Don't do it. Just focus on the cannon. Just your targets, that's all. Astraea swallows and lets the world become only the buoys and the reticle for the KEW as Double-Tap takes over flying the Raptor. Her shooting isn't as good as his, but it's still fairly good all the same. Likely a reason why even though she favors Talons, she's been decent at helping to take out Heavies. When Stirling reports, she lets out a sigh of relief and leans back to wait for Yohan to take them back to land.

Jigger's tone is light, amused: "Yeah, I should stop making bets with you that end up with me doing your laundry, Banshee," he shoots back, before he leans forward to watch Yohan's flying and Nova's shooting. "Great work, you two! You make a good team," he says, before switching attention to watch Mason's approach.

Aubrey toggles the comm again. "Yeah," she offers, not terribly enthusiastically. "Good job out there," she adds for the raptor crew.

"We Bad, We Know It, We Kilt It, Didn't Blow It." Why Double-Tap has a singy-song thing for them to land is beyond even his own brain. Still, though, the takes that Raptor home and even offers Nova a High Five of Raptor Justice!

In Raptor Code a High Five is Actually a Splodey Fist. So that's what happens.

"You ever wanted to fly in a Viper, Bite?" Isolde glances toward Calliope. "I wonder if it's like going from a freight truck to one of those speedy little Caprican street cars." Then she watches as Mason queues up, and she rests her cheeks in her hands, ignoring the slight zing of pain through her left palm.

While he's not as perfect as Yohan is on the gunnery, or as perfect as Eva on the piloting, Mason is able to manuveur the course with relative ease for the large size that he is in the cockpit. For someone that seems to get shot up a lot out there against the Cylons, he does quite well with finessing the targets and flight pattern before completing the course and popping back around to rejoin the flight. "Eh, no extra shots fer me tonight, flight. But good enough fer Colonial work."

There is no way Astraea could ever keep up with Double-Tap's... slang? euphemisms? Whatever one calls them. She can however, manage a fist-bump. The woman is happy to end up back at the controls so she can take them up to watch the others. The pilot seat is her happy place and surely he's content to be where he can play games or get the ECO seat and controls back where he had them. The woman is quiet on the comms, watching Mason finish his run.

Calliope chuckles to Isolde. "I tried back in combat training and was kind of crap at it. Didn't quite plant my nose in the dirt, but I came pretty close. Maybe once I have more combat time under my belt I'll try it again, but I'm pretty happy as a bus driver." All that said, Mason' performance gets a soft "Damn." She adds, "I mean, it does look kind of fun, I guess."

"Double expert. Not too shabby at all there, Jar," Stirling says in an approving voice. "Hawk, why don't you show them how it's done at the Royal Naval Academy."

Double-Tap is definitely all about supporting the others, kind of. He's got his game out and he's playing but he's also paying attention to the runs being made. "Noice." is tossed out over the comms. But then he's back to shooting things on his game. What a nerd.

"Whisper, Hawk. Roger that. On your mark." Emrys maneuvers his viper into position. While he waits for the mark he closes his eyes and just exhales for a brief moment. If anyone could see him, it would almost appear he's trying to meld with the machine. When the mark is given eyes snap open, and it's on. No thinking, no pressure, just flying.

"Great work, Jar!" Jigger calls enthusiastically, as he marks Emrys' location, watching his run closely.

Nice, Jar! Go get em, Uncle Hawk," Banshee says over the comm. Her tone isn't quite as woohoo as usual, but she's participating in rooting on the group.

There's perfect and then there's perfect... Emrys' performance on the obstacle course even has the CAG arching her eyebrows in amazement. "Double perfect. Pretty impressive, Hawk." She scrolls down her list. "Soundbite, Pi, you're up next."

"I don't suggest you bet against Hawk either, Jigger," Banshee points out with a small smirk.

"See? I don't think I could do that." Calliope rolls her Raptor up to give the course a go, though. "Let's roll, Pi!" And up they go.

When Whisper announces their names, Pi looks forward to Soundbite. She gives a sudden thumbs up, and a cheesy smile. Then she gives a deep breath, closes her eyes, sends up a quick prayer, and then begins to work at her console as they head to the course.

"Royal Naval Academy Flight Instructors. Others make pilots, we make legends." Emrys deadpans over the comm, presumably in response to the CAG's earlier call-out. It's said in the tone of a unit motto. Then he falls back into silence, to watch the rest of the quals.

There's an impressed whistle from Jigger. "Nicely done, Hawk. And duly noted, Banshee," Alain adds, somewhat wryly. "At least not when it comes to piloting bets, eh?"

Calliope shows far more confidence this time around the obstacle course than she did in her previous piloting quals. She's usually a steady hand on the stick, and tonight she manages some quick turns and swoops of her bus that almost make the big ship look graceful.

The Tauron ECO breathes deeply as she focuses on responsibilities at the console. She manages her KEWs much better than the quals after Canceron, and even manages to get through the ECM blocks with ease. There's a few mistypes as the ghost of her ring finger tries to hit a key that is now up to her pinkie or middle finger to tap instead, but she seamlessly backtracks to resume her work.

Stirling is holding her breath as the Raptor moves into position. She holds her commentary until after the second half when the pilot and ECO switch positions. Then she's grinning. "Nice job, ladies." There's definitely a dollop of extra enthusiasm there as Isolde earns her wings. "Arda, you're up next."

Calliope manages to the shooting targets without too much trouble. It's not as smooth as her run behind the stick, but she gets it done. She lets out a littl squeal of excitement as Isolde finishes the piloting bit of the course. "See? You totally did it!"

While the run looks good to Alain's eye, he waits for the official results from Stirling before he offers his commentary: "Great job, Soundbite, Pi!" he calls enthusiastically. "Good luck, Arda." He still can't quite bring himself to say the LT's callsign with a serious face... despite being able to do so for Priya, mostly.

"Way to go, Pi, Soundbite!" Aubrey congratulates.

"Good job, Pi," Astraea offers when she hears the results. "Knew ya could do it." The Scorpian has been largely quiet, but she knew how hard the qualifications were weighing on the ECO. Particularly after losing a finger.

When they switch seats, Isolde has to take a moment to think back to the practice sims she's been doing, and she snorts slightly. "If Kell shows up in a Cyper, I'm gonna put so much cold oatmeal in his bed... Gods, I swear..." Then she takes the controls, and manages to fly quite well, and each passing success has her confidence building. When they get to the end and Whisper offers her congratulations, Isolde finally feels a weight off her shoulder. And, only Calliope bears witness, but Pi is doing a dance with lots of shimmying and fist-pumping. Then she collapses backwards in her seat and offers a soft prayer to whichever gods made that happen. She tilts her head toward Calliope and her grin is ridiculous, dimples in full force. "I need a drink." Then she laughs and gives back the piloting seat to Calliope.

Stirling watches Jackson take his turn. "Nice flying, Elf." She can remember his callsign. Err, sometimes. Then after everyone in their group has gone, Stirling gets on the comms again, sounding amused. "What do you think, Jigger - can you beat Cherry through the obstacle course? No bet, just a friendly challenge."

Jigger's coughing. Or maybe clearing his throat. "I'm up for it if you are, Cherry," Alain replies, all too readily. "Ladies first?"

"Oh, we are so getting drinks!" Calliope vows to Isolde. Adding, in a less bubbly manner, "I could use some, actually. This shore leave has been kind of weird. But this is awesome!" The victory dancing just makes her cackle, and she steers the Raptor back to hang and watch.

"Nova, Jar. What do you think. Want to bet dinner on Jigger finishing higher than Cherry?" Mason asks amusingly over the channel.

"Cherry, Hawk. Your turn to uphold the honor of the Royal Academy cadre." is what Emrys offers over the comms by way of encourgement, as he maneuvers his viper to get a good view.

"Considering he was one of the perfect scores last time, Whisper, I don't feel this is a fair challenge." However, Eva, hearing the call across the comms, moves her ship from where she's been waiting to the start of the course, "Are we going KEW as well as flying?" She waits, until she's given the go, and the parameters of the competition. "We have honor, Hawk?"

"Jar, Nova... This is Jigger we're talkin' 'bout. He couldn' win a bet if th' bet was ta lose." Astraea's got her own Raptor balanced and hovering; an easy feat. But she does bring it up to a point where she can better watch the challenge that Stirling has set forth.

"Nova, Jar. Your confidence is underwhelming." Mason responds with a teasing lit.

"They always told us we did, Cherry." Hawk fires back, before adding with what sounds like a grin in his voice "Of course, they could have been lying. Like the time they said we were all getting holiday leave."

"Come on Jigs, show your stuff. I have faith in your flying," Banshee says over the comm, "As long as it isn't against me."

Double-Tap has been quiet over the comms because he's been focused on his game. He's quiet like that when he's trying to beat something he should've beaten a long time ago. Well, he did. Before. But now he's playing through it again and it's just one of those things. Anyway, he does look up while a cutscene is playing and watches the action happen.

"Your ability to outfly me in mock battles says otherwise, Cherry," Jigger quickly comes back with, though there's distinct amusement in his voice all the same. "Hey, I've won a bet. At some point, in the past." Maybe.

"And you nearly got a perfect score, Cherry. Seems like a perfectly fine challenge to me," Stirling insists. "You can do guns too if you like."

"Weird?" Isolde grins toward Calliope, brows arched curiosity. "What's got it weird?" She then pays attention to the console readouts. She grins slightly at the comm chatter, but she just shakes her head.

"Jigger, Nova. An' what bet would that be? Tell ya what... You beat Cherry, I'll take ya to my favorite bakery. My treat. Buy whatever ya want." Nova settles back to wait for the outcome of things. Likely not expecting her income to be hurt in the least.

"Oh, no, Nova. Definitely not betting against Cherry on this one. Sounds like Hawk might take you up on that, though," Jigger adds, with a grin. He leans forward in the cockpit, waiting for the signal to go, falling silent and tense while he waits. When the signal's given, he punches it forward, not looking at Eva's viper, just focusing on the course ahead initially. Of course, flying alongside another viper running the same course as you means a headcheck is worth doing, and maybe it costs him a few seconds, maybe not -- but when they come to the twisting, turning course, he checks for Cherry's viper, not so much to see whether she's ahead or behind, but to make sure they don't impact.

"Yeah. Long story," Calliope replies to Isolde. And not one she tells in the Raptor. "I'll give you all the details later. It's just personal stuff weird. Not, like, war weird." She beams as Eva and Jigger square up, leaning forward a little to peer at what comes of this.

"Alright... I'll buy the first round." Isolde flashes a wry smile over toward Calliope before her attention is then caught up on the stand-off between Jigger and Cherry. She watches with some envy at the way they flight, but also starts to take some mental notes.

Eva, true to her usual flying style, does two things. The first, is she doesn't bother to check to see what Alain is doing, trusting the other pilot to handle his own business, and she adjusts, perhaps unconsciously, her flying so that, even though the are supposed to be flying the course separately together, they are flying the way they have in the past, as wingmen, flying and fighting together, their KEW fire as well as their ships and weaving and twisting in the way that only long experience can bring. Moving apart, drawing back together, and coming to the end of the course at almost the same moment.

The obstacle course is a tight battle, but in the end, Jigger's viper reaches the 'finish' line just behind Cherry's bird. There's not much more of an opportunity to call out congratulations before they enter the gunnery range though, the Lieutenant pulling off some fine hits, just not as tight as Eva's. "Been flying with you out there long enough to know the results. Congrats, Cherry," Jigger calls, grinning and giving a thumbs up to her through the cockpit window as he brings his viper alongside hers.

"Not too shabby, Jigs," Aubrey calls over the comm. "Almost had her. Nice flying, Mom."

"Now that was some slick flying. Nicely done, Cherry, Jigger." Stirling then says, "Cherry, I assume you know how the scoring works?" She's moving her Raptor into position. "Can't let you all have all the fun."

"Nice flying Cherry. I think if we didn't have honor before, we're probably cleared to say we do now." Hawk's tone is level, but it's not hard to hear the pride in his voice.

"Whoa," is Calliope's reaction to Cherry and Jigger's work on the course. She shrugs. "Yeah. OK. Flying a viper looks pretty fun."

There's a long moment before Astraea says anything; the two flew and shot close enough that it's hard to tell who came out ahead. But in the end, the scores come out. She tuts gently, hitting the comms. "Shoulda talked ya into a proper bet, Jigger." She wriggles the controls a bit. "Whisper, iff'n ya don't put us all ta shame, you gonna buy us a round of drinks?"

"Like throwing knives," Isolde says with a laugh toward Calliope. "I bet we could do some sims if you wanted to give it a try."

"And to you, Jigger. Expert flying is still expert flying." It really was close, and Eva will never diminish that, "Thanks, Banshee, Whisper, hawk, folks." And then she moves her viper into the position Stirling is leaving, "I think I remember how the scoring works, Whisper. I'm sure I won't need it."

"The honor is that of the Colonial Forces now, Hawk," Jigger calls out to the Virgon pilot. "So you're obligated to share it with us. Also, all your drinks and fine food -- that's just how it works," he says with a laugh. At Stirling's words, he goes silent, quickly manoeuvering his viper into a position to observe with keen interest.

Stirling smiles. "I'll buy you all a round either way," she promises. Then she's pushing the throttle forward, maneuvering the Raptor through the obstacle course.

Stirling may not be the best pilot in the squadron, but she makes a decent showing with excellent marks on both the piloting and - after switching seats with her ECO - the marksmanship. "Well at least I won't have to drink myself under the table in shame," she comments. "All right everyone. Nice work. Let's head back." To the shipyards, which is where they've been parking their planes. "First round's on me." One might presume she means in the shipyard lounge.

"Excellent work, Whisper. I feel we shall allow you to continue on serving as our CAG." There's no small amount of humour in her voice, as she sees Stirling come back onto the 'line' before she dismisses them back to the base and she forms up with the rest of the wing for the descent.

With an appreciative whistle, Alain says, "Remind me not to bet against a run with you, Whisper," Jigger's voice is amused, more than happy to follow instructions to head back -- there's free drinks on offer!

"Bravo, Whisper!" Calliope hollers over the comms. Raptor CAG represent, and all. She is totally in for drinks.

"Heading back to the barn, or the shipyard," Banshee says over the comm, before she turns her Viper back towards the planet and Argentum Bay.

A free round of drinks is nothing to scoff at. Especially after managing to -- albeit barely -- get 'expert' on her qualifications. Astraea takes a deep breath and aims back for the barn. "Good work out there," she offers to Yohan once again as they head to the shipyards.
