Jump to End

Twilight has descended on Argyros Naval Station, but the base doesn't sleep. A Caprican CAP patrols the skies. Marines stand at important posts all around the base. The night watch mans the air control tower. And just west of the base, a flight of unlucky Timber Wolves is performing night training exercises. Flying in formation with no instruments, finding targets outlined in the pre-flight briefing around the city for practice in target identification, practicing low-altitude maneuvers... stuff like that. The exercises are supposed to culminate in a live-fire practice on a small island off the coast, which would explain why the Wolves were equipped with live ammo for a training mission near an urban center. Stirling is in her Raptor. "Flight, Whisper. We're going to do a simulated SAR pickup. Iris, Nova, head for the coordinates I'm sending. Everyone else - standard covering pattern." She feeds two sets of coordinates - not too far from each other - to the two Raptors.

Calliope has been mostly some form of quiet stressball during her time back on Caprica, but she's enjoying the night-time exercises. She pilots one of the Raptors in formation with the Wolves. Keeping a bead on where Astraea and Irene's buses are sent, but maintaining her own position among the Vipers. "Whisper, Soundbite. Acknowledged. Maintaining covering pattern."

Though it is only a training exercise, Kell, as usual, takes it rather seriously like all other aspects related to duty. When the order is given by the CAG for the escorts to provide cover for the simulated SAR pickup, Razor is already pulling back on his flightstick to gain some altitude, giving him a more elevated view around the area and also the higher chance of altitude advantage in an engagement. Diving down at the enemy is usually an advantage when it comes to making an attack run. "Whisper, Razor copies." A simple confirmation spoken over comms.

Training practice just doesn't have the same edge as real missions, and as a result, Alain's energy is lower than usual -- as much for that as for it being a night mission. He stifles a yawn in his cockpit, the sound of his music faint -- but still audible over the wire when he answers, "Jigger, copy that." He angles upward, settling into an overwatch position somewhere between the two raptors.

Irene, the pilot of one of those raptors, eyes the coordinates that flash onto her console screen. "Whisper, Iris. Wilco." Is her terse response as she already changes her heading to put her on the new course to the SAR pickup LZ. She glances aside at her co-pilot, Gabriela, and quietly prompts, "Still awake?" She knows the ECO is, she's just talking a little, since it always seems much quieter during night flights, comm chatter aside.

"Copy, Whisper, moving into position." Eva has not strayed far from the rest of the Wolves for the duration of the exercises and she does not do so now. Without instruments to rely on, she's had to trust to her own senses and the senses of the pilots closest to her. A glance, towards the last position she had for Hurricane, before she settles on not far from Astraea's raptor.

"Whisper, Hawk copies." Emrys isn't thrilled to be on night maneuvers for training, but he manages to keep it out of his voice. Up he moves to his assigned position in the cover pattern, ready to respond to any imaginary threats that might appear.

Gabriela makes exaggerated snoring noise in the Raptor as she adjusts her DRADIS powering it up as they're instructed and adjusts the coordinates in the area. She smiles scanning the area as they naviage along, "Hmm what's that? Are you interrupting my beauty sleep?" She teases and offers, "Skies look clear at the moment." She offers highlighting the various other fliers as the sensors pick them up.

"Whisper, Nova. Copy, inputting and adjustin' flight to coords." Astraea's settled into her raptor and just glad to be out and doing something. It's not live combat, but it's better than simulators and paperwork. SAR is her bread and butter- or was. Her bird angles off a bit, falling into a similar pattern as Irene's as they move in the general direction of the coordinates provided. There's a glance back to her ECO: "DRADIS clear?" It's expected to be, but it's habit to ask.

If there's supposed to be tension between Calliope and Isolde -- what with the first being Caprican and the second being Tauron -- it must be buried very deep. Pi is still chipper as always being with Soundbite, her nine fingers drum idly at the keyboard she hums something from Rion Orion under her breath. Occasionally, she adds the sound of a heavy electronic bass into the humming, but is otherwise content to follow the maneuvers. She keeps an eye on each little blip and bling on her DRADIS.

"Whisper, Harpy. Copy that. Moving into covering pattern," Elena reports back over the comm. She settles into assigned formation, her black eye and split lip from the bar brawl mostly healed up. Her eyes flit over DRADI, finally back on, with a look of relief. They're pretty reliant on instruments, being without them for the beginning of the exercise felt like literally flying blind.

Nora isn't one to complain about night exercises, grateful for the extra training time to continue kicking the rust off, especially with mock emergency conditions. But there's no doubt that exercises, even difficult ones, don't quite get the adrenaline flowing like the real thing. She steers her viper into position as they all form up to head toward the designated coordinates, an eye on the city below more than the dark, empty skies above.

Calliope adds some timely 'Bum-bum-bum' back-beat muttering to Isolde's pop humming. Pilot/ECO coordination at work. She can't help but relax a little as the instruments come back online. Whatever fun it was navigating without them, they're handy. Especially with low night visibility. She maintains that covering pattern with her flightmates.

The rescue operation proceeds with routine precision. The Vipers fly a covering pattern. The Raptors swoop down to pick up thir imaginary victims. Then, out of the blue, their DRADIS monitors light up like a frakking fireworks display. And it doesn't take DRADIS to see the flashes of light all across the sky as dozens of Raiders suddenly wink into existence in the skies over Caprica City. As if that weren't bad enough - there's an even bigger flash of light and a Base Star appears. Then - further to the east - another.

The Colonials knew that the Cylons had jump-capable Raiders, of course, but they've been few and far between up till this point. And although the Wolves had experienced a Base Star in atmosphere on Picon, a jump attack of his magnitude is unprecedented. Besides the base star, there are easily a hundred enemy ships, in clusters at various points across the city.

It's worth noting that some of the Cylons don't make the jump successfully... jumping too low into buildings or a tall comms tower or - in one case - a hillside. Such are the perils of jumping intra-atmosphere, even for killer robots.

<FS3> Kell rolls Composure: Success (6 6 3 2 1 1)

SAR isn't Alain's favorite thing, practice or no. Too many bad associations. He flicks his music louder, fingers drumming against the instrument panel as he glances lazily out the window, stifling another yawn. It's only belatedly that he glances at DRADIS, and frowns. He even taps it once or twice, because that's definitely not right. Right? Got to be broken.

"HOLY FRAK ON A SHINGLE!" Elena yells, luckily off comms, as everything on DRADIS suddenly goes to virtual hell. Raiders, raiders BASESTARS. "Shitshitshit." She slaps over the comm, "Harpy has, too many Raiders to count on my screen, and two motherships to boot. Pretty sure this isn't part of the exercise! Whisper?" She jukes her bird to one side as a Raider explodes after coming out of jump too close to a building to maneuver away from it.

When the night sky begins to light up like a Christmas tree, Kell can't help but stare as hostiles begin appearing, "Razor Flight..." Then his voice fades as the word that follows is spoken at a much quieter volume, "Contact?" The amount of Cylons jumping in is an enormous count and the two Basestars definitely tips the balance in the wrong way. For now, he remains in formation with the others flying cover for the simulated SAR pick up, waiting for orders.

"I'm glad you're up and the forecast is good. Scream if we're about to fly into an unlit building." Irene requests, mostly joking, but it is dark. She turns her head to see the outline of Nova's raptor out there, getting a visual to go with the dot on the scope. The birds start to veer apart from each other eventually, and she's soon focused on flying - and not crashing into the sides of stuff, or clipping things that might be expensive to replace. She'll slow and steady to the coordinates, drop to the deck for a precision landing and quick pickup. Routine, even in the dark. What's not routine, of course, is the sudden change in weather. "Frak me, it's raining Cylons?" Or fireballs, as one of the raiders collides with a comms tower above and ahead of the raptor. "Hold on!" She burns hard for the sky.

<FS3> Astraea rolls Composure: Success (7 6 2 1 1)

Squeak, squeak squeak. Gabriela grumbles, "Who ordered flash flooding?" She says adjusting her instrumentation and then as flashing in the distance begins she lets out another curse as she starts to reach for her comm. But as others report in. She hisses in the cockpit to Iris, "This isn't just a bit of raining Iris... This is a damned storm of the decade." She says and begins switching her systems from the training mode to tracking mode powering up her jammers. "Warming up jammers and weapon pods. I hope you wore something comfortable. This is going to be a mess."

Nova doesn't even need her ECO to say anything. Her own DRADIS can tell her as much about what is going on. To the Scorpian's credit, her Raptor doesn't rattle too much as she jerks slightly at the stick. "Holy frak." The radio was on for that, broadcasting her gasped words to the entirety of the flight. "Flight, Nova-" her voice strengthens. "Goin' weapons hot." She's not waiting for the Major's orders on that, no. She's just quickly gaining altitude, adjusting the VTOL thrusters on her bird to begin the climb, following the vipers that are surely already on their way towards the swarm.

Faye is off in her own world in a way, she's too busy thinking about doing it all properly and checking her fuel gauges. Seriously, she probably know her Til reserves better than anyone, not that she has a good reason for that or anything. That is until there's the people making calls and she looks up and around. She checks the DRADIS, then looks out, DRADIS, eyeballs... "No fraking way." She says off comm, her hands moving to get things going for her Viper. This was going to be messy.

The sudden arrival of the cylons doesn't quite get the reaction from Eva that one might expect, given the sheer size of the invading force. No shocked words, no sudden jerking of the stick to try to avoid the seeming deluge of enemy fighters. Instead, she simply manuevers her ship closer to Addison, falling back into the wingman position. "On you, 'Cane."

No one can see the way all the color drains from Stirling's face when she sees all those ships. Off-mic, her breath catches and she murmurs, "Oh my Gods." Several seconds tick past in silence while the CAG swallows hard and gets her shit together. Her voice is a little off but still confident when she finally speaks. "Flight, Whisper - we've got to protect the airfield so we can get the rest of our planes off the ground. Engage at will. Godsspeed." Anyone on the joint forces channel can hear her ECO, Wasp, relaying the tactical situation to air control to coordinate with the Caprican forces.

Emrys is autopiloting through the exercise. Fly pattern, SAR picks up imaginary victims, a bunch of cylons jump in. His brain screeches to a halt and returns for a second look at that one, and then instinct takes over. The switch is flicked, moving his weapons to hot, and he begins to fly much tighter. "Whisper, Hawk copies." Engage at will. Alright, then.

When Isolde's DRADIS explodes with lights and sound, she leans back abruptly. Her fingers start to move almost in total instinct, her right occupying more keys than her left to make up for her lack of pinky. She is almost flying across the keys, tagging and sorting the contacts as they flood. "Flight, Pi. I've got more than a hundred contacts... please advise, DRADIS cannot sort them individually yet. Too much overlap of signal. I'm trying to isolate." She glances over toward Calliope before she twists in her seat, immediately switching to her ECMs. "I'm trying to single out the heavies, please advise."

"Lords," Nora breathes as the Cylon force appears, literally, out of thin air. That a few raiders don't exactly stick the landing is cold comfort in the face of two basestar - the first she's seen since her return to flight. (Turns out they don't look any less intimidating from the air.) "Whisper, Shirts. Copy that." She hesitates a moment, but leaves it at that, going off-comm as she checks over her instrument panel, running through a by-now-familiar combat-prep routine to the cadence of a prayer recited under her breath.

About the time Alain's gaze flickers up and spots the flashes in the sky -- as well as a couple of explosions of crashes -- he exhales sharply. Not broken. "By all the Gods," he's muttering, and there might be a broken prayer that follows as he sits straight, adrenaline zinging through him, clearly no so much asleep anymore as he checks his weapon systems. "Roger that, Whisper." His tone, too, is tight -- none of his usual enthusiasm for frakking up toasters -- this is going to be a fight they're more likely to lose than win, and he knows it.

"Oh, frak." That's Calliope's first reaction to appearance of Cylons - basestars and all - in atmosphere. The failure of some of them to navigate the finer joints of atmo jump precision doesn't raise her spirits much. That's still a lot of toasters. Just for Isolde's ears she mutters, "They're coming home." She swallows hard and gets to priming her weapons systems.

Elena goes weapons hot, "Whisper, Harpy, copy that. Taking down any bogies heading for the airfield," she says calmly over the comm, before clicking it to mute before she starts cursing a blue streak. She throttles her bird down to make an arc back towards the base, scanning for enemies coming towards it, swallowing hard against the bile rising in her throat. This many, is a full scale assault.

Isolde glances toward Calliope with a edge of concern in her eyes. Then she glances back at the base star. Already thoughts are churning fast in her head as she tries to keep filtering and isolating targets, tagging them for DRADIS. She's searching for those patterns -- how are they grouping, are they forming wings, and then trying to make estimations on which directions the swarm might go. Her fingers twitch a bit, and the stump where her left pinky had been begins to ache a bit.

"Cherry, Cane. Remember when I drew that shit on the board and you told me I was batfrak crazy?" Addison's voice comes over the coms as he settles his Viper in next to Eva's and starts to line towards the horizon for intercept. "It's going to be our best chance. Can you handle going ass to ass?"

"Whisper, Bingo, Copy." Faye says then follows it up with, "Iris, Bingo, when we get back we'll switch." Because ambiguous messages are clearly the best, or maybe it's just her way of trying to give her incentive to come back. Tap, tap, tap, flip, flip, and the simulated round count zeroes out and the live round counter ticks up on the HUD. "Ohhh Gods." She murmurs off comm.

"Point in fact, you are batshit crazy, 'Cane. However, given the current situation, I am not above inviting a little bit of crazy in." A glance, over towards Addison's cockpit, before she nods, whether he can see it or not. "I can handle it."

With their primary objective presented, Razor sends another quick acknowledgement over the comms to Stirling, then returns to radio silence like usual. He stays in formation with the others, looking calm on the outside but his grip on his flightstick tightens a bit as does the grip on the trust lever as well.

"Whisper, Iris copies. Rejoining formation now." Irene calls back, forcing the raptor to claw its way up off the deck in the steepest climb possible. She lets out a long breath, perhaps to calm her nerves after that initial jolt, but otherwise looks as cool as a Virgon cucumber. "Bingo, Iris, it's about time." But that's all she says about that, keeping radio chatter to a minimum and her attention on the task at hand, mainly, gain altitude and rejoin the rest of the flight before the raiders can clobber her. "We'll get through." She tells Gabriela, storm of the century or not.

Van was silent in the face of the tragedy-in-progress, working to control breathing through a throat suddenly too tight to get him his needed oxygen. "Flight, Milkman, copy protect the airfield." There's a pause, and then, as he wheels his fighter around to join the others, he asks in a tone that suggests he isn't going to like the answer, "Is there anything in the area that can take on a basestar?"

"I have a feeling the answer is going to be 'just us', Milkman." Eva's voice is all business, as she moves with the rest of the flight towards airfield and their current mission objective. "If Edson was anything to o by, they're likely to target the tyllium stores first, in an attempt to cause maximum damage to the grounded planes."

"Edson. Gods." Calliope mutters that low to herself, at Eva's invocation of the name of the Canceron base. She remembers. Between that and the basestars looming down over her whole planet, her frame is one of drawn tension. Deep breath, and she directs her fingers to her controls to get her weapons ready.

"Cherry, Cane. Moving on flight located bearing 121. Pick off what we can and clear the road. Soundbite, Cane. Keep us up to date on your tail, there's a lot of noise out here and the pings are pretty active. If you need a scraping let us know." Addison flips over the Viper some and a grumble is heard. "Left my best music player on the damn base."

"Copy that, Cane, you have the lead." Despite the fact that Addison's plan of attack has the two wingmen separating, she'll still defer to him for movement and formation. "I think I see one with my name on it."

Elena moves into position on Nora's wing, keeping Stirling's raptor between them. "Whisper, Shirts, Harpy is on your wing. Let's remind these frakkers that the Wolves are here," she sounds confident, but that isn't really how she feels. Two basestars. TWO.

Gabriela flicks a glance up and over to Iris, "Just be sure to batten down the hatches." She murmurs quietly as her systems come to life and she begins highlighting the other pilots and the incoming elements. "Bringing ECM online. Looks like Hawk and Bingo are nearest. I'll see if I can't suppress anyone being too nosy." She says as she begins jamming some of the incoming raiders.

"Flight," Isolde's voice bursts over comms. "I've got it. Based on maneuvers and patterns, I'm... 95% certain that heavy Raiders 'A-3-2-4' and 'A-3-2-6' are heading in for a bomb run. Repeat," and as she repeats the designations for Heavy1 and Heavy3, she immediately targets those heavies with her counter-measures. She glances toward Calliope. "I'm already focusing counter-measures."

"Harpy, Shirts. Roger that. Whisper, shout if you've special need us." In the meantime, Nora's formed up on Elena's wing, and within eyeshot of Stirling's raptor. They speed along with the rest of the Wolves into the cloud of raiders, a head-on attack seeming the only way at this point if they want to get to the air field in time to save anything on the ground.

Emrys settles into position as they prepare to meet the cloud of raiders, finding himself a likely target and attempting to line himself up with it.

They suspected something like this, Astraea and Kell. They got records from Edson; AARs, guncam footage. But it's been less than a week. They'd only begun to scratch the surface, not begin to prepare new strategies or tactics. And certainly not for an assault in this style. Astraea can only breath shallowly as she locates the two pilots she's familiar with: "Jigger, Razor- Nova, settlin' in on your tails. Angle port, assist th' other Raptors an' help clear th' skies?" There's a slight shake to the timbre of her voice, but she's catching up to the pace of combat. Settling into it like a familiar routine.

"Cherry, Milkman. That's what I'm afraid of. Hopefully the Capricans have learned the lessons of Triton, Edson, and elsewhere and have secured their tylium stores." Van checks the charging lever for his KEWs, and accelerates toward the fight, his heart still thumping in his chest. "Axion, Wammy, Milkman. Let's stick together on this one. Clear each other's tails, then head for the bombers. By the numbers, people."

The tension in Alain's voice suggests he's holding it together well, despite their very visible outnumbering. Although he grimaces within his cockpit, he doesn't weigh in on the topic of Edson, instead focused on the battle right in front of them. "Razor, Jigger. On your six. Focusing on those heavies," he says, a sharpness in his voice. They've taken out far too many of his fellow pilots in the past. "Roger that, Nova. Don't let 'em get a lock on you. This is going to be a mess."

When Edson is mentioned, Kell is actually familiar with the name since he and Astraea had been reviewing data that they had requisitioned for the base strike the Cylons did back on Canceron. As they near the bandits that are attacking the airfield, Razor listens to the comms and answers Astraea, "Nova, Jigger, Razor copies. Going to clear Wammy's tail, call out if you run into trouble." There are so many bogeys in the sky and it's hard for Kell to focus on all of them, so he can only select one that is going after one of their Raptors. "Will swing around on a Heavy next pass, Jigger."

Calliope gulps soft at Isolde's report, focusing her targeting on one of those incoming Heavies. Every move she makes speaks of tightly-bottled fear of all that firepower bearing down on Caprica. At least she's got some talons to release it with. "Flight, Soundbite. Targeting heavy I-D'd by Pi, A-3-2-6." She mutes her comms after that's off to murmur "Frakfrakfrakfrak" into her instruments.

Irene climbs up to her vipers, Faye and Emrys, then glides in behind them. "Hawk Bingo, Iris, following your lead." She tells them, so they know she's there and ready to go. "Watch those heavies, Weathergirl. Jam anything going after our vipers so they can attack without having their tails chewed off."

"Copy that, Pi," Stirling acknowledges the bomber reports. She adjusts her Raptor's fight to focus on one of those bombers. Then to the general chatter she says, "Flight, just focus on this group. We've got help coming." Just come fast, she prays silently.

Elena's Viper sweeps through atmosphere like a hot knife through butter as she ducks beneath the shots of one raider, then noses up over the shots of a second, before firing her KEW to chew up the topside of that one. It goes boom and she swings around again to tangle with her next target. "Scratch one."

Eva's attack on the heavy does not go as well as she'd have planned. She gets in barely a hit, and takes a heavy one for herself. Not that she'll make any sort of announcement, though the smoke pluming from her wing serves as a dead giveaway, as she swings back around go in for another pass.

"Flight, I've onl-- " And then the heavies both explode in a sudden blast of concentrated fire from Stirling and Addison. Isolde gets back on comms, nodding as she does. "Nice shooting, Whisper, Hurricane." She glances over her readouts, trying to track the other heavies. She keeps her focus on who might be on their tail, reporting to Calliope that, "No one likes us." Then she switches her ECMs to another pair of heavies. Just in case.

Axion's Viper goes up in a fireball, but fortunately so do a number of the Raiders. They take down the two suspected bombers here before they can loose their bombs, but another wave has begun dropping ordinance on the other side of the base.

Emrys can't quite get a shot on his preferred target, but the return fire goes well wide. Gritting his teeth, the Virgon pilot pulls his bird around for another go.

Van spots a Raider curling in toward Axion, "Axion, Milkman. You have one on you. I'm on it." The Picon pilot darts out to gain an angle, then cuts back in, walking KEW rounds across the Raider's body and then starting to turn away, "Splash one. You're all cl -- " and then Axion takes a missile and her Viper becomes a fireball, "Frak! Axion is down. Repeat, Axion is down." The strain in his voice tightens even further, "Wammy, Milkman, I'm coming around to give you a hand."

"Flight, Nova. Raider down." Astraea sounds satisfied with herself, but then- she's had some poor luck her last few dogfights. Still, there's KEW fire past her wings that she angles sidelong to avoid. "Jigger, Razor- got somethin' on my tail." She spots the smoke in the distance, swallowing uncomfortably. Even so, she has to focus more locally; there's danger here and she wouldn't get there in time anyway.

"Cherry, Cane. Heavy A326 is down, circling around to aid your tail." The words from Addison comes as he passes through the last of the debris from the Heavy ship that is no more and he starts in to assist the wing.

Calliope lets out a low "Heh" in response to Isolde. "Maybe they just like us too much." It's a weak attempt at humor, but at least it's there. Seeing raiders blowing up helps. She adjusts her targeting, takes another deep breath, and keeps her flying loose. To avoid being liked by Cylon fire.

"I could use the assist, 'Cane, just give me a second to put myself out." Which, Eva mostly does, with a few barrelrolling maneuvers. At the least, she's not smoking quite as heavily.

A hard bank to the right, another over to the left as Faye tries to keep up with her wingman. A fast glance around her as she works to keep her situational awareness up. Her breathing is coming in more quickly and she finds the target -- a Raider near the one Emrys is on. "C'mon, c'mon." She murmurs as she tries to stick with them. A thin smile as she lines it up and holds down the trigger for a few moments, tearing into the Raider and sending it back into its stream of 1's an 0's.

Stirling is known for flying very cautiously in combat, biding her time, taking no chances. But not today. She's not being crazy, but there's a definitely aggressive edge to the way she beelines for one of the bombers and takes it down with a missile. She saves her second for the next round of bombers. Got to make them count. Instead she gives Wasp a clear shot with the rear cannon as she brings the ship around.

Alain's probably praying as he enters into close combat with one of the heavies, since his shot actually hits, KEW fire strafing across the nose of the other ship. It's damaged, but not enough to take it out, and not enough to stop the missile that comes out, streaking towards Axion's ship. "FRAK!" Jigger's expressive frustration is unusual for the normally level-headed pilot as he sees the fireball out of the corner of his cockpit window. "Nova, stay mobile. Going to kill this frakker." He swings around for another pass at the heavy.

Gabriela lets out a frustrated hiss one of the Heavy's pushes through her jamming and Axion goes up in flames. "Frakking toasters!" She says with frustration even as she continues sending up jamming, "Hawk, Weathergirl, you've still got flyer behind you. Be careful, trying to keep him blind." She says sending out more directed energy at the remaining heavy's.

Irene follows the Hawk and Bingo into the fray, but hangs back enough she can react and keep the bus out of trouble. It's that space that gives her a view of the unfolding battle and time to line up and fire a rocket at the raider tangling with Hawk. It hits squarely enough and lights up the night with a flash, but the dark silhouette of the Cylon vessels flies on, largely intact.

"Cherry, Cane. Your ass is clean. Mine however still has this little frakker thinking he can play." Even as the pilot says it, he flips his Viper back over on itself, rotating the dorsal and feeling the sudden change in force. The depression of the KEW begins as streams of tracers light up over what was must moment's ago his wake.

Sometimes, you really go get by with a little help from your friends. At least, in Eva's case, as Addison and at least one other viper and a raptor, things are moving too quickly for her to catch IDs help to clear the heavy on Eva's tail. And she avoids the second missile, "Thanks for the assist, Flight. 'Cane, I'm coming to you."

As the Wolves clear out most of the remaining Vipers, more continue to hammer the eastern side of the airbase. But the good news? The Caprican pilots have begun to scramble their birds. The alert craft have launched, and more could be seen getting prepped down below if anyone had the time to look. If they weren't too busy fighting for their lives.

Wammy and Meteor's bird is the next one to get hit. It doesn't fireball immediately, but it goes down in flames and hits the tarmac below in a shower of parts and flame that is certainly not survivable. There wasn't time for them to bail out.

"Flight, Whisper. Divert to that other flight bombing the east side. Milkman, team up with Cherry's flight. If those stragglers pursue, take them out."

Elena sweeps in at a Heavy, right behind Stirling, and lends her KEW fire to the rest of the arsenal from the Wolves which decimates the bomber. "That's one that won't bomb the base," she grunts low over the comm, before swinging around to go after the Raider chasing her wingman. "Shirts, Harpy, coming to play with the one dogging you."

This time, Alain's KEW fire scores a solid hit on the heavy's body, landing the same time as Faye's fire. "Thanks for the assist, Bingo," he says, none of his usual whooping joy of a kill -- because another missile is let loose and streaks towards Wammy, the Gemenese pilot's fingers clenching for a moment. "Flight, we need to focus the heavies, leave the raiders till after, we're mobile enough to keep them distracted, but if those heavies get in range..."

"Meteor, Milkman, nice shooting, Splash T -- " Van just needs to stop talking to his wingmen, because that's twice he's been cut off by a missile. "Wammy and Meteor are going down!" The cursing that follows that is lost as Van lets up on the wireless control, keeping the swearing inside his cockpit. He turns to the source of the missile... and it's going down as well. So he clicks his wireless back on, "Whisper, Milkman. Copy. Forming up with Cherry." He turns toward where Eva, Addison, Calliope, and Isolde are flying, and his voice is tighter than ever now, "Cherry, Milkman, it looks like the Toasters still want to play."

There's a shaking sort of laugh from Astraea, even if it's not over the comms. She's got her groove back- maybe, just maybe. That's another down. Two talons, two raiders down. "Whisper, Nova- copy." She doesn't immediately zoom off, but rather orients herself with Alain and Kell both, settling in on their wings as they start towards the other end of the base and where the rest of the fight is happening. As they start to converge with the new swarm, she keys in new targets for her talons. "Jigger, Razor, Nova- sing out if ya need me."

With the bandits on their side of the furball thinning, Kell was able to knock one of the Raiders out of the sky after sticking to its six. When more bogeys enter their engagement range, Razor can't help but wince at the large number of hostile blips. The order does come in from their CAG though, and there is no hesitation from the young pilot as they move on an intercept course. "Nova, Razor, you've got two angling in on you. Trying to head one off." He says once he spots the Raiders going after Astraea's Raptor, already making an attack run on it.

Chaos! Slightly organized chaos! Irene would make note of all the disappearing contacts on her screen, but she's still pursuing the one and trying not to be dazzled by others exploding and falling out of the night sky. Her second rocket is also a sure shot, disintegrating the hull already wracked by Hawk's kew. Good night, raider. She hears the CAG give the change of plans and banks over, jetting eastward over the airfield while acknowledging "Whisper, Iris wilco. Bingo, Hawk - same play." Vipers first, being the play, while Weathergirl jams, and she hurls rockets at whatever strays too close.

Nora easily dodges the fire directed her way, but can't seem to manage to either shake the raider on her tail or get off a solid hit on it. Again her KEW fire just barely skims past it, putting a scratch in the nice shiny chrome, but nothing more. She swears under her breath, and her teeth are still grit in both focus and frustration as she taps the comms to note, "Harpy, Shirts. Copy that, thanks for the assist. Can't seem to take care of them myself tonight for some reason."

Faye banked hard to one side, then to the other, though her shots barely give the raider pause unlike Alain's rather brutal dissection of a shot. "Jigger, Bingo, all yours I just scratched its back." And with that she's banking off and around. She catches sight of a Raider heading in toward Irene and she's off headed in that direction. "Iris, Bingo, watch it! I'm goin' for the one angling on ya!"

Gabriela seems about to switch over to her energy weapon even as Iris is navigating them over to the next frey. "Wing, Weathergirl, looks like we're all more popular suddenly! Try not to get soaked." She says as she continues trying to cover her wing's back and let them focus on taking down the enemy flyer's.

Alain's grimacing within his cockpit, fingers less drumming and more slamming for a moment. With a heavy breath, he flicks some switches, and then punches it, flying aggressively towards the bombers.

"They always want to play, Milkman. Nice to know you're on our side of the court." So, yeah, Eva's happy to see that whole flight element didn't bite it." With the slightly larger group, it's more of the same. Shoot, rinse, repeat, try not to die. You know how it is.

Calliope keeps shooting. She doesn't allow herself much optimism as they clear the sky of many of those Raiders, or as the Caprican pilots get in the air and into the fight. But, maybe a little. She maintains her covering pattern near Eva and fires for all she's worth.

Elena's KEW fire kicks up a line of holes along one wing, that only seem to lightly scrape up the armor. "Shirts, Harpy, care, there is still one on you. I annoyed it a bit. Gonna try to finish him."

The angle of attack that Kell had on the Raider angling in on Astraea's Raptor offered up a great opportunity that he doesn't miss. Leading the target just right, he presses down on the trigger stub and his twin autocannons roar to life. The rounds rake the cockpit of the Cylon fighter, effectively decapitating it and turning the Centurion pilot into pure scrap. The bandit begins flipping end over end as it tumbles to the ground. "Nova, Razor, looks like you are clear." With that, Razor quickly scans the skies and watches Alain dispatching a heavy raider without issue. But then he caches sight of a hostile on him, "Jigger, Razor, you have one on your six, coming to assist!"

This is really not a day for the history books. At least not the sort a pilot wants to remember. Once again, she gets little purchase on the raider that's on Addison's tail. Thankfully, she's not got any on hers, and that gives her enough breathing room to flip back around and come in for a second attempt. "Just give me a mo, 'Cane."

Maybe frustration works for Alain. Or maybe that momentarily aggressive movement is enough to surprise the heavies, his KEW fire raking the body of it, screaming past it as it explodes. He makes a satisfied noise, but no whooping celebration over the comms, instead fixed on the battle at hand. It doesn't take him long to turn and target the next one down the line, his viper shuddering briefly as a raider scores a hit on the side of his viper. "Razor, Jigger. Appreciate that. Busy frakking these heavies up," he says, voice tight, almost sharp.

"Harpy, Shirts," Nora steers clear of the stubborn raider finally spinning out toward the ground. "Thanks, finally cleared the other off my six. Watch yourself as well, you're coming into range of those heavies. I'll trail across and provide cover."

"Cherry, Cane. I seem to have picked up a few admirers it seems. I'm going to try to circle around a bit and wiggle. Wait for the third bank and I'll extend it, try to set you up for a cleaning action." The Viper that Addison flies sways from side to side almost like a lullaby before the third one comes and he banks hard, leading one of his followers towards his wing.

Emrys picks a new dance partner up, and manages to put a solid hit into the body of the thing. It's still flying, though, so round he comes to try and finish the job.

Another down and two more evaded. Astraea takes down one of them and Kell the other. She flips the comms: "Razor, Nova. Great hit!" There's a sort of life to her voice; one that hasn't been there in a while. Not while they've been on Caprica, for certain. Not on base and definitely not in the sorties over Delphi, where she kept getting hard hits and returned few to the toasters themselves. The woman hits the thrusters a bit more, zeroing in on one of the heavies as they cross her line of site. She adjusts her targeting, biting down on the inside of her cheek.

Van settles in alongside Addison as the other pilot lines up for an attack, checking his six and skittering a line of rounds off one of the trailing Raider's nose. It's Addison's hit that finishes the Cylon off, and he notes, "Hurricane, Milkman. Nice shot." One of his checks behind him spots an attacker, and he loops easily away from the line of tracers it spews at him. "'Bite, Milkman, you've picked one up. I'm on it."

There's a lot of projectiles flying around, but Irene keeps that raptor dancing and out of harm's way, anticipating the raider's attack run and denying it the angle. While Faye tries to knock it off her tail, she reciprocates, or tries to, sending a talon screaming at the one pursuing her bunkmate. It goes wide, and she turns in, going for a second attempt at it. "Bingo, let's do that again."

Once again the Colonial fighters intercept some of the bombers making their run on the airfield. Two get taken out, two manage to loose their bombs before swinging around to target the fighters. Meanwhile, more Caprican fighters are beginning to take to the skies. Faster than one might expect given that these are not the alert fighters. For all the teasing, the Cap Navy seems to have its act together. Unfortunately, it's not fast enough to keep some of the bombers from hitting the city, or to keep the Basestars from disgorging more Raiders. The odds are not looking too good for the home team.

Isolde glances up toward Calliope as she feels the zing across the body of the Raptor, and then she's quickly checking over the status of the ship before her focus drops back to the counter-measures. She frowns a frew moments before she feels the Cylon systems give in, and she can start disrupting their systems. More and more targets blink out, but only to be quicky replaced. "There's too many," she says, but only for Calliope's ears.

Stirling hasn't said much, outside of the handful of terse instructions. Her missile takes down another bomber, then she takes quick stock. "Got one on your tail, Milkman, we're on it." She glances at the DRADIS and her heart sinks.

"Iris, Bingo, I'm with you!" Faye says as her shots go wide and she jerks the stick to the right to try and keep up with the movement of her target, thankfully the Raider aiming at her wasn't doing much better.

"We just need to hold them off a little longer," Calliope replies to Isolde. For what purpose, against all this? The blonde pilot probably has no idea. But she tries to keep that very faint strain of optimism alive in her voice. She winces at the skitter of fire across their hull, waggling her heavy wings in the air to try and avoid a second round of that.

Gabriela looks relieved as the Raiders on her wing's back doesn't get in any hits. She staysquiet though not letting up the heavy jamming doing her best to keep them free to keep their fire on the Raiders as the next round of fire comes in.

The Wolves cut through more Raiders, but there's another flight waiting to take its place. The Base Stars have begun firing down on the city. But astute observers may notice new contacts on DRADIS - bearing CF transponders. Battlestar transponders. The full might of Galactica and Athena's combined air wings is zooming down from orbit - from Battlestars that none of the Wolves even knew was there. And as if that weren't strange enough, the Battlestars themselves are following them down - presumably to tangle with the two Base Stars still hovering over the city. It'll take them a couple minutes to get down here, but at least they know the cavalry has arrived.
"Shirts, Harpy, this one is slippery!" Elena calls over the comm, as she fills the raider chasing her wingman full of holes, but it continues flying. She manages to spiral her way out of being struck by a missile, dropping chaff just in time. "That was close." She blinks as DRADIS lights up with large, friendly contacts. She looks up through her canopy and lets out a loud cheer. "Now THAT is what I'm talking about! Welcome to the tussle, Battlestars!"

"Whisper, Milkman, copy. I usually do." Van rolls his Viper away from the rounds spewed out by his attacker, twisting to draw a bead on the Raider behind Calliope and Isolde. His KEWs hammer away, but the tracers mostly flicker around his target rather than hitting home, a few sparking armor but nothing more. "Whisper, Milkman, breaking down now." The twisting roll turns into a dive, aiming to pull his trailer along with him and into Wasp's sights. "Wasp, Milkman, nice shot. 'Bite, Milkman, this one's a slippery one. Still on it. But I think it's been dissuaded -- Jigger, watch your six, incoming."

<FS3> Alain rolls Perception: Success (8 7 5 3)

"Cherry, Cane. How you holding up over there?" Addison calls out towards the Captain as he settles in once again on her wing after a brief fly by, including awesome lens flares. "I'm thinking 352 looks good, how about you?"

"Flight, Nova. Heavy down." And the last of them, for the moment. When the battlestars appear, the Scorpian's eyes go wide and she leans forward, to look through her canopy. Not at DRADIS, no: this must be seen with her own two eyes. Sure, being posted to Scorpia until she became a Wolf meant she saw them at the shipyards, but to see them 'in action' and so many in one place is a whole other story. "Frak me," the pilot murmurs. On the comms, at that. You're welcome, everyone. Take that home in your bank. She doesn't even notice at first before cutting the line with a click. Then it's back to business; angling in on one of the raiders that's got Alain's number, lining up another Talon.

"You're clear, 'Cane. Going to see if I can try to help mop up the rest of these." The new transponder signals on the DRADIS though, actually brings a smile to Cherry's face. The calvary has, indeed, arrived. And not a minute too soon. But that doesn't mean that they still don't have their own work cut out for them. "I think Marshal must have missed me."

It's not a whoop of joy, but it is a sigh of relief from Alain as the last of the heavies is taken out -- as he spots the missile streaking past Addison's bird, missing. He scans DRADIS for a moment -- then exhales, as he sees CF transponders. "Thank Ares," he's muttering to himself. No time to celebrate, though. "Milkan, Jigger. Roger that," he says, as he brings his viper around, flying less intensely -- closer to his normal style now that the heavies are gone, as he tags one one of the two raiders targeting him.

"The Galactica!" Isolde might be a bit too excited, but it's the Galactica! She relaxes a bit, breathing out a short sigh as she spots the flights of familiar -- or semi-familiar -- ships. She feels the zing across the wing of the Raptor, but is too elated to be concerned. She looks over DRADIS, starting to focus on her next targets. She glances toward Calliope. She hears Van's words through the comms, and she shakes her head. "Milkman, Pi... I'm switching to KEW."

As more Cylons are cut down, including the target that Kell was going after, his attention shifts to DRADIS are more activity is seen. Friendlies this time, and big ones too, which has the young pilot widening his eyes a bit. "Quick response..." He murmurs to himself, though he does cant his head slightly to the side, "Caprica is one helluva bait if this was some sort of operations." An operation that none of them knew about, at least those that aren't senior officers. Razor does force himself back to the current dogfight and he sees more Raiders going after his wingman, angling in on one of the bogeys.

Stirling's ECO misses the slippery Raider on Van's tail. It's admittedly hard to line up a shot for someone in the back. Especially when your mind is on the people in the airbase below. But Stirling comes around again for another pass. She actually grins when she sees the new contacts. "Looks like the cavalry's arrived, flight." She doesn't sound as surprised as she should be. "And most of the base squadrons have launched. We just need to keep holding them back."

Gabriela lets out a curse as he Dradis begins pinging again, "Iris, there's more conta....oh! Lords of Kobol! It's the Battlestars. Iris! We've just got to weather a few more showers, Switching to K-E-Ws, I'll try and peel this troublamker off our back!"

"I don't even have a weather related analogy for this." Irene admits to her co-pilot, seeing the CF contacts on the DRADIS. At least the raider that was chasing Faye she managed to dissuade with a rocket. That was enough to kick in the else attack a different target subroutine, but she follows it anyway. "Let's clean these toasters up, Weathergirl. Kill that one especially, if you can. Bingo's just playing footsies with it."

Emrys manages to down his dancing partner, but there's no time for celebration as he moves on to the next one. But then the Battlestars arrive, and there is at least a brief moment taken for celebration in the cockpit of his viper. They might actually live, now.

Nora scores a punishing hit on one of the heavies, nailing it right in what passes for a cockpit, sending that infernal red light up in an explosion of glass and shrapnel. Down it goes, but there are plenty more where it came from, even if every moment the Wolves hold the line more Caprican Vipers join them in the skies. When the battlestars appear she nearly gasps in surprise along with everyone else, and there's still surprise clear in her voice as she replies to Elena: "Harpy, Shirts. Let me see if I can help with that. Did we know the battlestars were nearby? I hadn't heard."

Calliope glances over her shoulder, for the briefest moments, to share a look with Isolde. It's one of disbelief. Even if she was holding out hope for something, she never dared to quite imagine this. "Thank gods..." she breathes soft, before returning all her attention to the remains of the battle.

Elena slides up onto one wing to avoid the fire of the Raider she's coming in at, and returns a volley of KEW into the enemy. Combined with the shots from her wing, the thing explodes. And that one is down. Nice shot Shirts!"

The chatter about battlestars causes Van to look up from the furball, finally, and a tight smile curls his lips, "That's a quick arrival." There's a thoughtful pause as he grunts through a G-force-inducing turn, his thoughts apparently along the same line as Kell's, "I wonder if they had intel but couldn't warn us." And then he has to get his head back in the fight, and he clicks his wireless on, "Pi, Milkman, time to double-t..." and then he notices Eva's attack run as well, and he chuckles faintly, "triple-team the toaster. I'm coming at it from below. I don't know that I've been happier to see the Galactica before." Between himself, Alain, and (especially) Isolde, they take apart their target, although not before it gets another glancing hit on Alain. "Jigger, Milkman, that one's gone."

The Wolves mop up the rest of this flight, and the rest of the CF planes get into engagement range and start duking it out with the Raiders. "Nice work, Flight," Stirling reports, her voice still tight. "But our work's not done. Adjust course bearing 165, let's go after that pack over downtown." As the Wolves move to engage, the Base Stars start climbing to meet the Battlestars, trading fire.

It's a tight furball, one that has Alain sweating through the tight turns. His sharp veer left allows him to avoid the fire of one of the raiders on his tail, but the other -- the one he's trying to target in turn, manages to rake KEW fire across the body of his viper before he rolls out of the way. His return fire is more hope and prayer than skill, catching the edge of the raider's wing. It's the other Wolves that manage to clean up his new friends, and with a prayer to Ares under his belt, he exhales. "Copy that, Milkman." There's still a tightness to his tone, despite the arrival of the Battlestars, his focus, for the rest of the fight, almost exclusively on the missile-bearing heavies.

<FS3> Astraea rolls Gunnery: Good Success (8 8 7 5 4 3 3 3 1)

with the immediate area clear, Eva has just enough time to pull up, rising into overwatch position. Not so far from her now two wingmen that she can't cover them, but high enough that she can get a good lay of the land while they cover Calliope's raptor in route to the new target location. "It's nice to see the old girl. It's too bad you can't ever go home again."

<FS3> Alain rolls Gunnery: Good Success (8 6 6 6 5 5 4 4 3 3 1)

Calliope flies on, positioning her Raptor so Isolde can work the back KEW gun to maximum effect. She's silent throughout the rest of the combat, eyes on the battlestars as if half-afraid she's imagining them. Gaze occasionally going down to Caprica below, to remind herself that it's still there.

At the last second, raiders cross Astraea's line of sight on one of the ones on Alain and she has to adjust. She tilts her Raptor to pick up the one chasing Kell, instead. Along with Stirling and Eva, it goes down rapidly. The woman breaths out. The tide, finally, is turning. Thank frak for the battlestars. "Copy, Whisper," she notes into the comms, falling in with the rest of the pack to head for downtown to start cleaning up.
