The ship may be abuzz over the results of the dueling inquiries, but down on Sagittaron, the war marches on. We join our battle already in progress. It's the middle of the night. This flight has the unenviable "night CAP", because the machines don't take a break even when the humans would rather be in bed. Perhaps especially when the humans would rather be in bed.

The flight has been uneventful so far, when suddenly there's a burst of radio chatter. Rabbit, whose bird was monitoring the colonial chatter, comes over the radio. "Whisper, Rabbit. I'm getting multiple reports of attacks in grid echo." It's not their grid assignment, but they would know from the mission briefing that grid echo is the highlands, in the vicinity of the contested Tylium mines near the front. "It sounds like the Cylons are cooking up something big."

"Copy that Rabbit," Stirling says, "Flight, Whisper. Form up - let's go see if we can lend a hand out there. Wasp, radio Dauntless. Inform them we're shifting position and have them send down the alert fighters to cover this area."

Night CAP is a lot better when you're back flying it with your wingman. Aubrey is settled in on one side of Stirling's Raptor, knowing Alain is on the other side. At the Major's order, she toggles the comm. "Banshee copies, Whisper."

Eva's been nearly silent, for the duration of the flight, having settled in on Razor's wing, speaking when spoken to, or when she needed to answer a direct question given to the wing or file a report, but there's no idle banter. Those days, it would seem, have been left behind by the Hibernian pilot. Not everything's changed, but that easy camaraderie? No longer. So when she does key up her comm, her answer is to the point, "Cherry copies. Razor, I'm remaining on your wing. Moving to bracket Nova."

Faye is looking over her controls, a glance toward the tyllium reserves... Always keep an eye on those. She hears the call from Stirling, and glances out her canopy toward the others in her flight. "Bingo copies." She wiggles her wings toward her wingmates.

Since the dustup at Camp Thorpe, Astraea has had a lot of swing shifts. Filling in wherever there's a gap, more or less. Night cap (the unfun kind) has been sort of par for the course as of late. She may have even snuck a thermos of coffee on board. Easier to do in a Raptor- it's often enough the bus drivers have to sit and wait for extended periods of time. She's taking a drink when Rabbit names contacts. She's swallowing and hitting her comm roughly along with the others: "Whisper, Nova- copy. Adjustin' trajectory." As they all align with the new course, she angles in to position between Razor and Cherry's Vipers.

"Were you... a fisherman?" Irene asks her co-pilot as an ongoing attempt on her part to guess what Wooley did before the war. He grunts in the negative, so she thoughtfully considers other possibilities. "Cake decorator?" Thankfully, Stirling interupts the game with new orders so he doesn't have to answer that last one. She gives him a squinty look as though she suspects him a cake decorator for sure, but hits the comms and follows the order to form up, finding a spot near her assigned wingmates, Bingo and Kestrel, "Iris copies."

Unfortunately for Eva, Razor is not the type to banter when flying on a mission so she would have a relatively quiet wingman for most of the Combat Air Patrol until now when Whisper issues new orders for the squadron. "Whisper, Razor, I copy." Is the instant reply and acknowledgement from the Libran Viper pilot and another quickly follows for his wingman, "Cherry, Razor, copy. Tightening escort formation with Nova's Raptor." The adjustment is made so that he is moving on the new heading and then he slips his Viper higher and to the starboard of Astraea's bird. Once more, his eyes are now focused on the horizon, keeping an eye out for any sort of tracer from either from the ground or even in the sky in case there is already an air engagement occurring.

Alain's been largely silent over the comms, inclined as he's been lately to turning up the music and drumming along when things are at ease. Even the return of his usual wingmate hasn't disturbed that particular pattern, it seems. "Jigger, roger that, Whisper," he keys his mic long enough to transmit, the music audible in the background still. He's probably not close enough -- on the other side of Stirling's raptor -- for the gesture to be seen, but he still gives Banshee the thumbs up, because that's also part of the ritual, as he veers towards their new heading.

As if it's just instinct, whether she can see him or not, Aubrey returns Alain's thumbs up across the void as she points her Viper's nose in the direction they need to head.

Ines tightens up her formation alongside Irene's Raptor, parallel with Faye. She's had a long week of long shifts and this particular CAP has been dangerous for the temptation to focus less than she ought to, tired and stiff from hours logged in the cockpit. Reports of 'something big' go a long way toward changing that. Adrenaline begins its steady drip into her bloodstream, waking up numbed limbs and picking up the pace of her heartbeat. "Kestrel copies."

As the fighters head towards the front, they can see flashes in the distance - explosions lighting up the night and signifying the fighting going on in the mountains. The flight has its own problems though. DRADIS lighting up big time. A dozen or more contacts inbound. "Flight, Whisper - cleared to engage. Good hunting."

The order acknowledged and formation set, Eva returns to silent flying, eyes shifting between the ground, the sky and the other pilots around her. Once the contacts are announced, and the order is given, she moves in to intercept, firing as soon as she has a shot at one of the incoming raiders.\

"Jigger, Banshee - let's focus on the heavies like we talked about," Stirling suggests/orders to her wingmates. "Targeting missiles at the one on the left." Aka Heavy1.

There's that spike as DRADIS lights up -- the one that makes Alain sit up, flip off his music, and focus, scanning DRADIS for the target he's looking for. "Roger that, Whisper. Going in hot on his friend." It could be an entendre, but it's Alain, so more than likely not.

"Banshee copies, Stirling. Jigger, coming to help you keep that other one busy so the bosslady can plant those missiles right up that tin can's backside," Aubrey quips over the com. She shifts to fall in to chasing her wingman, targeting Heavy 2 to keep up the pressure Alain delivers on it.

When the squadron arrive at their new objective zone, Kell sees that there is something going down on the ground with the explosions and flashes of light. Soon after, the ECOs pick up the DRADIS contacts and the Libran shifts his focus to the dark, night skies, knowing that they are heading towards the cloud of bnadits up ahead. Reaching forward, he lifts the red cover on the master arm switch and flicks it to arm his twin autocannons. With weapons hot, he now focuses on the Cylons that are coming right at them, quickly picking one that is headed towards himself, Eva, and Astraea.

"Iris, Bingo, I'm getting painted a bit out here. You can hold down the fort for a second or two right?!" There's a bit of an edge to her voice as she catches a quick glance out the window toward Irene. The right move is to go in heavy, don't try and avoid this merge just... get in there. She takes a deep breath as she looks over the scanners again. Oh boy. "Don't die." She mutters off comms as she pushes the stick up a little bit, rolls over and starts in toward the merge with a little play on the pedals and a whole lot of aggression.

As the Raiders seem to more heavily focus on the Vipers, Astraea tightens up her piloting some. She slows, scaling back the thrusters a bit to allow both Eva and Kell to rocket past her a ways; enough that she can start lining up shots on the Raiders that follow. She, too, is quiet on the comms, but that's been largely standard since her capture. Chatter comes secondary to getting her own brand of revenge.

Kell spends a luck point and is back in the fight!

Aubrey sweeps in after Alain, and she triggers her KEW to unleash fire into the body of the Heavy Raider. She pulls up hard, evading the fire of a raider, just in time to see the Heavies both stop being threats. "Scratch both Heavies, nice shooting, Whisper!"

Rabbit's bird takes a solid hit from a missile. "Flight, Rabbit! We're going down!" he calls, an edge of alarm in his voice. At least they're not exploded though - it looks like it'll be a reasonably controlled crash-landing in friendly territory.

It's probably a good job that Eva hasn't been prone to speaking on comms, from the expression on her face when the flies through the remains of the raider she was targeting. If it means anything, whatever she is feeling, she seems to be focused on doing the job, and as soon as she's clear of the debris cloud, she's retargetting one of the other attacking raiders.

As is so often the case, when things begin to get exciting, it happens fast. Tonight faster than usual, too, sheerly for the number of targets involved. The array of them spreads across Ines' DRADIS like a cloud. "Iris, Bingo -- Kestrel. On the heavy chasing Iris."
She blinks away the ghostly print of shadows left on her retinas by its fiery detonation against the black of the night sky, and she's just beginning to assess other targets when her Viper takes a hit, rattling the fighter hard. Targets have to wait a moment as she flips through displays, checking various systems to see whether or not she's in more serious trouble than it seems. Failing to find any critically disabling damage, she banks and loops back around to focus on the raider with a lock on her.

Stirling looses her first missile at one of the heavy raiders. Not fast enough to save Rabbit, unfortunately, but nevertheless she turns the enemy ship into a fireball. "Good job taking out those heavies, flight. Rabbit, hang tight. Iris - you good?" She didn't see what happened to Kell, can only watch so much at once.

It's a difficult shot, Alain jigging left and right to try and avoid incoming fire from two fronts -- one grazing his wing, the other zinging over the body of his viper. He still manages to get a shot off on the heavy, but the vehicle is already swinging away. Thankfully, his wingmate is on the case, with a direct attack, along with more fire from another source he can't pinpoint in the moment. "Banshee, Jigger. Have I told you how glad I am to have you back on my wing?" he comms, grin audible in his voice as he gives a whoop of delight when a glance to DRADIS shows the second heavy down, too. "Nice work, Whisper!" he calls, as he swings around to target one of those raiders taking potshots at him.

h Faye kicks to one side, then kicks it over to the other, but the motion of her rudders throws her shots off meaning they aren't quite as clean as she liked. The upside is that the Raiders shoot wide and don't catch her. She whips her head around to quickly look at the others even as she yanks hard back on the stick. "C'mon... C'mon... Get back in my sights you frakker." She keys the comm, "Kestrel, Bingo, How's Iris?"

There's a lot of swearing in Scorpian under Astraea's breath. Off-radio. Her ECO probably hears it, but that's about it. Her shot glanced off the raider in question and doesn't dissuade it in the least from its target. She sees that shot on Kell and where it hits- the cockpit. Her radio is flipped on: "Razor- do you read?" There's concern, clear as day, in the Raptor pilot's voice as she kicks in her thrusters once again to go rushing after the Raider in question, as it hasn't called off its quarry yet.

Another wreck in as many days, Irene is on a bad sort of streak now. As she banks to fire a talon into a raider going for Stirling her raptor eats a missile. There's a boom, a kick and she loses altitude like an elevator with its cables cut. Silence. A gout of flame licks out from the underside of the bus, the engines cut out and she's just gliding in darkness. "Flight, Iris, dropping out. Everything's red."

The thing about head on engagements is that they can be very brutal and that is how one can describe the one that Kell just experienced. His twin autocannons roar to life and the rounds shred the Raider he was aiming at, tearing up the ring and blasting it right off, the saucer-like piece flipping end over end towards the ground. The Cylon itself, with the loss of the wing, begins spiraling towards the ground, out of action. Razor, however, was very unlucky this time. Or very luck, as one of the Raider's autocannon rounds slams into the canopy of his Viper, a couple of inches above of teh pilot's head. He was that close to get decapitated and instead, he is showered with glass, cutting into him. The sudden shock has him not responding to the comms as he is dealing with and open cockpit, his immediately reaction going into evasive, breaking off and away from the engagement zone. This only draws a second opportunistic Raider onto him with the original one still going after him. For now, he is fighting the ripples of pain from his chest and left arm, as well as the dullness from his head as two pieces of shattered canopy banged into his helmet.

Aubrey chuckles and toggles the comm. "I'm still the best wingman ever, right? I even brought you back cakes. Plural." She hauls on her stick and turns to chase a light that is trying to shoot Alain's Viper up. "Got one of the ones on you, partner," she declares.

In between her run on the Heavy and then being liberally peppered with fire from a Raider, Ines only catches onto what's happened to Irene's Raptor at approximately the same time Faye asks. Her heart sinks. They hadn't been fast enough. "Bingo, Kestrel. She's-" But Iris tells the flight herself, and the comm transmission ends there. It might've anyway, given what she sees in the dark sky ahead of her: Kell taking astonishing amounts of damage.
That heavy blanket of calm settles in then, a weight that presses down on her, forms a hard anvil of determination in her stomach. Her pulse rate slows. Her breathing, too.

Alain exchanges fire with the raider he's in close combat with, neither managing to get a clear lock on each other. But that leaves the second raider on his tail with a cleaner shot -- KEW fire raking through his cockpit. "Frak!" he mutters, as alarms start wailing -- and some should, don't, within his cockpit. "Shot to shit here, Banshee. I hope you got that frakker," he's coughing -- there's some smoke in the cockpit, but DRADIS is still working, at least, as is navigation, even if it's more heavy-handed than he's used to.

"Copy that Iris, we'll cover you," Stirling says, even as she looses her second missile at the Raider going after Aubrey. "Banshee, there's still one more on Jigger. I'll try to break up his flight path - you tag him." Splitting her attention, she asks on comms. "Razor - status?"

Aubrey cuts off one of the light raiders coming for Alain, and she loops her bird, swinging back to fire at the enemy perpendicularly. Her cannon cuts through the ship like a hot knife through butter and she bursts through the explosion in a barrel roll, avoiding the enemy chasing her. She looks back as the other bogey strikes a hit on Jigger's cockpit. "Jigger, Banshee, you ok in there?" She arcs hard to come back and put herself between her wounded wingmate and his attacker, charging at the light.

Eva shifts away from the raider she was targeting, as she sees Kell move to disengage and the pair of raiders move to follow him. Her own shots are hardly effective, and she can't get there in time for the raiders to prevent them from hitting Kell. But she certainly seems determined to try to stop them from finishing the job.

With his flying ability hampered by the lack of a canopy and the possible concussion from being knocked in the helmet twice, Kell is a bit slow to evade even though he was focusing on the attempt. Looking over his shoulder, he does see the second Raider coming up in time and by the time he sees it, bright, hot tracers are already scything out at his Viper. A couple of rounds hit his fuselage but a burst slams into the cockpit area again. The entire controls section is totaled, sparks and more debris pieces flying up, cutting into his flight suit and arms again. Razor's Viper is going down, no question about it as he has no longer any control on his bird, the comms were also shot to pieces.

"Frak!" Faye says as she jerks her head to one side and then the other, trying to pick up on Irene's Raptor while giving most of her attention to the Raider she's after. She kicks the rudder, avoiding the Raider's shots as her own trace down the body of the Cylon and send it out of the sky.
"Iris, Bingo, you got this! Just... don't die." She hits the stick over to the other way, banking it, ruddering ot turn it into a roll as she sees another Raider punch some shots into Kell's viper. "Woh." She mutters off comms and angles in on it.

No dice. Still no dice. Astraea can only watch, dismayed, at the aftermath as Kell's Viper is hit again. She's still screaming after that Raider, even as she calls back to her ECO to mark the Libran pilot's position. "Flight, Nova- we've got Razor marked for pickup. Transmittin' coordinates to th' Dauntless an' Camp Thorpe now." Sure, it might delay her backseater's jamming for a moment, but it's clear she doesn't exactly care. Not when she's watching Razor's bird go down. Again.

"Jigger, Banshee, go evasive, this bastard is slippery!" Aubrey swings around for another run at the light raider that has her wingman in its sights.

Iris is radio silent, likely because she's really busy trying not to die or her comms are down. The raptor sinks rapidly down into the darkness, visible only by the trail of fire behind it and the stuttering, coughing engines which light up and give the bus some choppy lift - just enough to land it and not turn into a pile of wreckage at the center of a fresh crater in the process.

The alarms inside Alain's cockpit are distracting, and he starts flipping some off. One in particular won't turn off, much to his apparent dismay. "Don't I know it," he mutters within his cockpit, as his shot hits the body of the raider, but doesn't appear to do significant damage. "Roger that, Banshee," he replies, the alarm audible whenever he comms through, turning sharply to make the raider's life more difficult -- and to hopefully present him with a decent shot.

Eva moves with a purpose, flying as if there were nothing else in the world she'd rather be doing, than going toe to toe with a raider. She just avoids getting exploded, thanks to the work of her wingmates, but her own raider still seems to refuse to go down. Now it's personal.

Finally, Astraea is able to get a solid show on the raider that had been chasing Kell, but turned to Eva instead. With Faye's KEW, the cylon craft is destroyed. Executing a sharp turn that probably churns her ECO's stomach, Nova pulls about and starts racing after the other Raider that had been harrying Razor. It'll be too late to change speed and trajectory before she notices it turn back towards her.

Stirling tries to break up the flight path of the Raider that's on Alain's tail. It seems to work - the fighter misses, and then refocuses its attention on Aubrey. "Watch out Banshee - it's gunning for you." She glances over to the other wing then. "Nova, Whisper. Acknowledged Razor going down. Hang in there Razor." There's a tension in her voice now though with two pilots down.

Faye starts to take a slow breath as she lines up on the Raider, shooting right into the body of it with her kews as a talon impacts it. The raider turns to bits of shrapnel in the sky as she glances out of the cockpit to see Ines going after a Raider. "Kestrel, Bingo. Shooting across its nose, ready for the break!" She tries to keep it short, but enough that her wingmate will know the plan.

"Bingo, Kestrel." The calm in her voice is absolute. Not natural, given circumstances -- but this is why she was even transferred to the Wolves, given her comparative lack of experience, as compared with some. She has a head so level under intense fire that it verges on abnormality. "Copy that."

"Nice work, Nova," Eva's voice comes across the comms, as the clear the raider, before she spins back around, sighting the remaining raiders, "Let' see if we can finish off these two and them assist those marines."

The raider that had been hounding Alain now turns on Aubrey, and the Piconese pilot doesn't shy away. She waggles her wings as it fires on her, and just scratches the paint on the port one. Then she's firing back and slamming KEW fire into its middle. It breaks up into pieces. "Jigger, Banshee. You're clear Jigs, covering Whisper!" She arcs to turn on the raider hounding the major along with everyone else.

It's perhaps to no one's surprise, least of all Alain's, that he doesn't manage to score a hit on the raider. Luckily, Aubrey's gambit to pull it off him is successful. In the silence of his cockpit, he utters a prayer of thanks to Ares, before he comms, "Banshee, Jigger. Thanks for the save. On your six," he replies, turning his viper to target the raider going after their CAG's raptor.

In the end, it's Astraea who wins that particular game of chicken. She's not happy. She hasn't been happy in a while, but seeing Razor shot down just made things worse. She knows what can happen to people on the ground; friendly territory aside. Her talon flies true enough and though neither it nor Eva's cannons hit especially hard, it's enough to send the enemy craft careening off into the hills. "Cherry, Nova- assistin' Kestrel." Since the Raiders harrying them are gone.

The world streaks by at almost incomprehensible speeds. Things happen fast. It's remarkable, considering: that it's even possible to coordinate such things in the heat of the moment. Faye's efforts to distract the Raider Ines has been gradually punching more and more holes into pays ample dividends. Forced to readjust, its shots on Ines fly wide so that she's able to roll over and avoid the stream of it, then adjust her angle to return fire, screaming past it. "Thanks, Bingo."
"Nova, Kestrel. The more the merrier." She flicks a glance at DRADIS, trying to determine where Nova's Raptor is going to be coming from so that she can adjust to accommodate that.
Some pilots care a great deal about achieving that Ace -- Ines, though, is not one of them. For her, the only thing that matters is that every last Cylon in existence is ultimately reduced to useless scrap.

As the dogfight continues, Astraea's ECO - who has been monitoring the colonial frequencies - says, "Nova - I think some of our marines are in trouble. Reporting heavy fire. Command contacted a Virgon squadron, but they're 'delayed'." He sounds uncertain.

As the ECO relays things, Astraea is already hitting the trigger on her talon and aiming to peel away. "Flight, Nova," she calls into the radio. "Th' groundpounders are under heavy fire an' th' frakkin' Virgans," oh, can you feel the love? "ain't gonna make it. Coordinates incomin'." Does she wait for the order? No. But much as she dove into the brawl with the Royal Marines, she's not going to leave her fellow Wolves to struggle.

"Copy that Nova. Flight, Whisper - we're diverting to assist our marines. Pigeon, Hotshot - hang back and cover our six. Everyone else, finish off those Raiders or disengage if you can," Stirling orders over the radio.

"Target eliminating, diverting to intercept coordinates." Eva flies clear of the firefight, moving into to pick back up on Nova's wing, pushing the throttle to try to make up the distance between their location and where the marines need them.

"Copy that, Whisper, Banshee is breaking off to the given coordinates," Aubrey states. "Jigs, you get yourself back to base."

"Negative, Banshee," comes Jigger's response, with a surprising sternness despite the continuous wail of one of his alarms. "Not about to leave our marines uncovered. Besides, there's no reports of SAMs." After a beat, "Tucking in on your six, Whisper, Banshee."

"Not going to do them any good if you crash, Jigger. But if your bird can hold together, fall in," Stirling tells him, pointing her Raptor in the necessary direction as her ECO helps bring down one of the Raiders with the rear cannon.

"Good thing I plan not to crash then, Whisper," comes Jigger's cheerful response.

It won't take much for Cherry to catch up to Astraea. The Scorpian pilot was off and ahead of the rest of the crowd initially due to getting the word first (and breaking off as she did to go assist), but a Raptor will never be faster than a Viper. She does listen to the comms and the alarms in the background of Alain's mic. She keys her own: "Jigger, Nova- shoulda made a bet before we took off. Looks like I'm clear this time out." Which is a rarity for her. Especially with just how reckless she was flying. As they near the site, she's gearing up with Talons to help take out the larger targets on the ground.

Once Eva's fallen in with Nova, the two pilots get to work assisting in clearing the targets. Even the fact that the flight is much reduced from what it was just means that the remaining Wolves will have to work that much harder to help them own. And so they do, Eva's flying controlled, not wanting to accidentally hit anywhere near to where the marines are located.

The Raider finally disintegrates, and Ines, checking her bird's systems for the second time and silencing any alarms still screaming, searches for and banks to draw into formation with Faye again. After the destruction wrought by the enemy flight, she's very much looking forward to chewing up targets on the ground. "Hang in there," she murmurs, into the empty silence of her cockpit -- a little prayer that isn't a prayer, for the men and women waiting for air support.

The flight streaks across the mountains towards the coordinates they were given. On the way, Whisper is able to make contact with the troops on the ground and get them more precise targeting info. There are two artillery vehicles - truck-mounted mortars - and a few dozen Centurions all advancing on a Tyllium mine. It's tricky targeting in the darkness, but marine spotters help some and the air wing is able to devastate the Cylon attack and drive off what's left.

"Good work, flight. SAR teams are inbound for Razor, Rabbit and (Rabbit's ECO). Nova, we'll land for medevac."

After her pass lands a Talon solidly on one of the artillery vehicles, Astraea comes back around. This time, heading for the marines themselves. "Whisper, Nova- copy. Headin' in for pickup." There's nervous energy in her voice. Likely waiting for confirmation to come down the wire of Rabbit and Razor's rescues.

Maybe it's personal -- having once been a marine, down on this very colony -- knowing the need for air support that might or might not come -- or maybe Alain's just trying to prove a point. Either way, his strafing and targeting is on point, despite the wail of the alarm that won't cease in his cockpit, every strafe earning a whoop of delight as his KEW fire rakes through the centurions and their artillery trucks. Only when the call comes in does he head back to base, pumping up the music to try and cover the blare of that never-ceasing alarm as he does so.

Irene cracks the hatch on her raptor and steps out onto the wing for a breath of fresh air, unfortunately marred by the smell of burning fuel and the black smoke pouring out from under the wreck of her ship. That's a coughing fit. Wooley's polite enough to put an arm around her waist and direct her off and clear. "At least you didn't kill us." He offers as she puts her hands to her knees and catches her breath. When she has, she tilts her head and listens to the sounds of the distant battle unfolding and the quiet closerby. "I think we can walk to Camp Thorpe from here if we have to." But she doesn't start off immediately, instead she unholsters the pistol at her hip and listens a while longer. "They'll probably come back for us. They need your cake decorating skills, Wooley."

Faye follows in with the rest of the wing, giving a strafe before calling in a request to to head out and cover Irene's downed Raptor. At least the skies looked clearer than before, and there wasn't any large dogfight overhead. She banks off and keeps it in low, looking for the downed Raptor pilot. A wiggle of her wings if she can find her and pass close enough. She starts in a pattern, covering the SAR birds and the downed Raptor pilot as she starts off.
