The fog lies heavy in the air. Dark things stir in the woods and the waters. In the distance, lonely howling inspires pity and lures prey.
Welcome to Assumption, a fictional town on Cape Disappointment in Washington state. Once, it was a sleepy burg full of wealthy gray heads, frustrated young ones, and not much else.
Then, Big Business found lithium out on Ruby Island.
The job market exploded. Newcomers seeking opportunities are arriving in droves. Assumption is now a mid-sized city. While Assumption is no rival to Seattle, it is on the map.
Nobody realized there were wards and bindings as old as time out on that island. Nobody knew that cutting into the earth to get at the white gold inside would slice at old prisons and weaken old veils.
Now, things which have slept for centuries are stirring once more.
Most people have no eyes to see what's in the darkness all around them. Most twitch their curtains shut, block out the sounds, and try to get on with their day-to-day lives.
You are among the few who either can't or won't do that, risking your own life and sanity to keep everyone else safe.
People like you come from all walks of life. They have all manner of abilities. There is no formal organization, just networks of friends and family members who choose to stand for their communities and the people they love.
Disquiet is inspired by properties like Twin Peaks, Alan Wake, Old Gods of Appalachia, Bridgewater, Lovecraftian fiction, and Stranger Things. What's out there is often a complete unknown; here and there, fragmentary legends or local ghost stories provide clues. Magic is subtle, the supernatural is often surprising, and 2552 hours of fog a year can hide dark deeds and darker alliances. The moment you try to catalog it as something known and understood…that's a vampire, you'll say, or that's a woman in white…is the moment you might just be horrifically, fatally, wrong.
