Although the air wing has been consumed by preparations for the big mission against Honnal, the war doesn't just stop and wait for them. There are still CAPs to do, and the Cylons aren't exactly sitting on their heels. The CAP is patrolling around Galactica as it hovers in Canceron orbit above Isabel Island. Major Webb, the CAG, spent a couple days in the infirmary after being evacuated from the planet earlier this week. He's back on flight duty now, but is sitting in a Raptor with Paige instead of his usual Viper. His voice comes over the radio. "Canceron forces reporting a wing of Cylons going after a civvie transport." He reads off the grid coordinates. "Form up everybody."
Sat in the backseat of Webb's Raptor, Paige is all business -- and not just because she's sitting behind the CAG. Really, it's just what she does. Her eyes are focussed on her DRADIS and on the other EC systems. She knows there'll be trouble on this run, after all. (And it's not a milk run!) Her attention is on looking for blips that describe the enemy formation in relation to the transport.
Back in the saddle again. It's taken a few missions and some cylon engagement, for Cherry to back into the swing of things. But here she is, pulling into formation to the right side of the raptor, "Copy that, Spider, on your lead." She waits for her wingmate to link up with her, before she proceeds towards the designated rendezvous location.
Easing up at a comfortable distance off of Kazimir's wing, the new addition to the Air Crew hasn't yet warmed up and so, keeps the chatter to a minimum. "Copy that. Hammerhead moving into position." Despite the chill, Roara maneuvers her viper to mirror Tinkletoes' affectionate little waggle with one of her own. There.
Their time in captivity didn't do Finn's fraying nerves or sense of competence much good. He too has had to take some time to get back into the saddle, but CAP's wait for no man. As such, Finn is behind the stick, and pulls up on Cherry's wing, Viper sliding into place easily, "Farmboy on your wing, Cherry...Let's take them down by the numbers."
As the patrol vectors off, they can see on DRADIS a half-dozen Raiders - including one Heavy - going after a civilian transport. The transport is trying to maneuver as best it can, but it's really like a whale trying to get away from a swarm of sharks. Not terribly effective.
Webb's crisp tone comes back over the comms. "Engage at will. Keep those bastards off the transport."
Three of the enemy ships peel off their attacks on the transport to engage the incoming Colonial ships.
Eva does a quick assessment of the situation, deciding on the heavy, as its missiles can do a hell of a lot more damage than the raider's KEW fire, "I'm on the Heavy, Finn. Wouldn't mind the assist." It's not required though. They work well because they trust each other to hit the right target at the right time.
"Hammerhead, Twinkletoes. Seems one of the canners is coming up to pay you a visit." Kazimir reports as he watches some of the Raiders split off from the target. "Let's get the transport clear and then we'll see how your new best friend feels about interupting our pleasant little flight." With that, the pilot flares the engines to move ahead towards the Raiders that are targetting the transport.
"Uglies, incoming," Princess says steadily. "Switching to jamming. Let's see if I can scramble some eggs in those toaster brains and give the transport some breathing room. You lot try to keep them from blowing us up, yeah?" It's not a question. Nor even an order. More like a hope. Nevertheless, her hands are on the board, working on setting up the ECM system.
"Right, I'm going after the Heavy as well," Webb responds to Eva. "Let's take that bugger out before it can do any more damage." Though it looks like some damage has been done already - scorch marks visible on the outside of the transport. "Good on ya, Princess. I'll see if I can keep them from locking on."
The transport takes a heavy hit, and the raider does as well, Cherry and Farm Boy's combined attack doing a good amount of damage. But not enough, and Eva maneuver back around for another attack.
The heavy raider is struck a few times pretty solidly, but those things have a reputation for being like tanks and it's clear why since it keeps on flying. Strangely though, no missile launches from Webb's Raptor. "What the hell?" He frowns at the system readout. "Got a misfire. Frakking hell." At least their Raptor wasn't hit.
Streaking by the two Raiders with the heavy, Kazimir tags one of them across the nose. "Hoped that would get it's attention. Single-minded little buggers, aren't they?" he reports as he starts to make the quick turn, flipping his Viper over to try to chase down the Raiders again, wriggling in slightly behind Hammerhead as she turns on the burners to give the Raider trailing after her a hard time.
The heavy raider is rocked by dual blasts of KEW fire from Farm boy and Cherry. Still, it's missile hits the transport hard, "Frak...That transport can't take another beating like that." He rolls right, still keeping on Cherry's wing as they attempt to bring down the heavy raider.
Paige continues to work on suppressing the aggressors against the transport, but winces slightly as some of their hits land, regardless. "Let's just hope it works," she mutters behind Webb, but not adding her voice to the general com chatter. She adjusts frequencies slightly in an attempt to enhance her efforts. "Like to see the transport survive, this time..." They all know it doesn't always work out that way.
"I see it, Twinkletoes," Roara answers, almost shifting as if to cast a half-lidded gaze over her shoulder. Following Kazimir's lead, she presses forward to defend the transport with the raider on her tail in mind. "Too bad I have enough friends," she adds behind gritted teeth as her viper dips into a graceful evasive dance before coming back around in pursuit. She's a shark.
The Colonial fighters manage to take down two of the ships attacking the transport, but not before the Cylons rake a few KEW bursts across its stern. There's a brief flare of an explosion out the back before the flames are snuffed out by the vacuum of space, but the bulk of the transport seems to be intact. It continues coasting along, losing atmosphere and drifting aimlessly - a stark contrast from the concerted evasive maneuvers it was doing before. Over the colonial radio band, the captain calls, "Mayday! Mayday! We've lost all engine power and life support is failing."
"Shit," Webb curses. "We've gotta get that last one off of them. Everyone concentrate fire."
Paige glances back to Webb. "I've got Mayday from the transport," she says, even as she adjusts to target further raiders with her jamming. "They don't have long." Briefly, she considers switching to kew, but the jamming still strikes her as necessary. Over coms, she adds, "Switching jamming targets. There's still one I can't cover." And, of course, it's the one heading their way.
"Frakkin' hell." Kazimir snaps into his comms before he realizes it. He knows that Paige will relay the message to Galactica to get out SAR teams, even if it may be too late. In the meatime, Kazimir cuts his engines to let the Raider on Roara streak by him before he fires his engines back to full to engage it while Roara concentrates her fire on the Raider attacking the transport so they're not crossing fire and risk hitting the failing transport.
Eva manages to get i a good hit, along with Finn, and the heavy goes down, but not before the transport is hit. Now the race is to take out the enemy and leave the air clear for the SAR evac.
"Little frakker," Roara hisses as the raider in her sights dodges her assault. She doesn't let up, following it right on past Kazimir as he'd intended ...with best friend in tow.
After the heavy raider rolls and tumbles into a great ball of fire, Farm Boy arcs back around to Eva's wing and at Webb's order, he moves in to make an attack run on the last raider going after the limping transport, "Farm boy coming in high. Cherry, drop down low."
"Keep on it, Hammerhead!" Kazimir calls out as the Raider/Viper/Raider/Viper pair streaks past, the Viper Captain keeping the Raider dodging to prevent Roara from being hit. In the meantime, he keeps trying to chew away at the Raider on the shark's tail.
"Oh, for frak's sake," Princess swears under her breath, mic still off, as the Raider strafes the transport. "Frak those cans already!" Her expression tightens and she adjusts frequencies and targets again, hoping for a better result. She glances back to Webb, giving a bit of a tight, apologetic grimace at her uncharacteristic cursing. Her mother would be mortified, no doubt. (Now, ask her if she cares.) Into mic, she says, "Switching frequencies. Continuing jamming. Nail those bastards, would you?" Her tone is far more polite and calm when she says that than it was in her off-comm mutter. Indeed, she sounds like she's asking someone to simply pass the salt.
The raider that's been attacking the transport isn't letting up. Nor is it blowing up. But the transport won't take much more, and Cherry pulls a class 'this is so nuts' move and guns her thrusters, "See you on the other side, Farm Boy," as she pulls ahead to try to position her viper in the line of fire of the raider, with any luck, Finn bracketing it from the rear.
"How the frak is that thing still flying?" Webb wonders aloud. Indeed it seems that Raider2 is losing bits off of it as it continues to stubbornly dog the Transport. "Bloody hell, flight, take that frakker out. It's one Raider. Come on." One can hear the frustration seeping through the radio. Leader of the year, he is not.
"Frak!" Finn grumbles into his comm as the raider lands another hit on the transport. Despite Farm Boy's best efforts, his KEW blasts aren't enough to actually down the raider. And then Cherry goes off and does something dumb. "Damn it, Cherry, if you die I'm gonna be pissed." Still, he gets the plan. When she streaks past to get ahead of Raider, Finn falls in behind the raider to line up a shot. "Workin on it, Spider, we're workin on it..." he mutters.
Roara bobs her viper down and up in the hopes that some of that sweet, sweet enemy fire from the raider behind her might find its way to the one in front of her. It's perhaps a bit more playful looking than intended. The stream of quiet obscenities from the pilot fades into silence as that energy is redistributed into her trigger finger.
"Yes! Finally." Webb sounds more exasperated than congratulatory when the Raider From Hell finally blows up. That seems to have been some kind of trigger for the other two, who break off and start heading back for the planet. "Oh hell no you don't," Webb says. "Run 'em down, flight."
Cherry is, more often than not, the queen of crazy. But she's still alive. That, and the fact that she's coming up on being the second double ace in the fleet is proof positive that her brand of crazy works, "Would I do that to you, Farm Boy?" She guns her thrusts, firing at the raider, even as it, and another of its sort attempt to shoot her down, and she comes out of all of that with not even a scratch. At Webb's command she follows the retreating raiders.
"Much better!" Paige comments drily, echoing Webb's sentiment as the two raiders finally go up in smoke. "Scrambling," she says over comms, assuring flight that if there's any way to keep those raider brains from being able to target properly, she's working to find it.
"Hammerhead, Twinkletoes, splashed two - let's see about getting back together to take out the other two." Kazimir sings out as he watches Roara wiggle and bounce about. "And here I thought you weren't any good at dancing." he says as he moves into position to take on one of the Raiders.
Roara chuckles as her viper falls in with Kazimir's to streak after the fleeing pair of enemy fighters. "Oh. I got moves, Twinkletoes. Believe."
Farm Boy's last burst of fire slam intot he Raider a moment after Eva's, and the raider goes down, unable to hit Cherry int he attempt. Finn swerves around the wreckage and then comes up to take aim on Cherry's next target, like a good wingman should.
Webb flies along behind the Vipers so Paige can continue to jam the enemy ships, but he taps his hand anxiously on the controls, wishing he had a Viper and a cannon. This is torture. At least he doesn't offer any demotivational posters for the moment.
"Oh, no, you don't." Eva manages a good combined hit, with Finn, to do some damage to the raider, but not enough. In she goes once again. "This is for making me drag Spider out of a barn!"
"I.. uh.." Kazimir seems stuck for a moment to find a quippy come back to Roara's comment about having moves. And it takes him a moment to get his bearings after the comment to find his bearings in. "Well.. the Raider apparently doesn't appreciate your moves?" he manages with a hestitation. Flirting? Not on Kazimir's list of skills.
"Are we SAR on this?" Paige asks Webb as they continue chasing down the flying tin cans. "Or do you want me to radio back for dispatch?" Her eyes don't leave her screen, however, extending her signal interrupts as far as she can.
"Technically I did the dragging, Cherry." comes Farm Boy's voice over the comm after his combined fire with hers prove insufficient to the task of taking that raider down. "One more firing run on this frakking tin can should be enough."
"Motha Fra-!" Roara swivels around her head on her neck ...er, as best she can with padding and a helmet meant to keep her in place. The raider's continued existence is taunting her. A personal affront.
Eva and Finn, once again, double down on a single raider, the enemy vessel disappearing in a cloud of shrapnel under their combined fire. "And that, was for making me have to stick my hands in your ship's guts."
"Nice shooting, Hammerhead." Kazimir offers as he waits for the Major's orders to return to base as he runs a few checks on his systems to make sure they're all in optimal operation still.
"Yes! Good work," Webb says brusquely. Then he answers Paige. "Check with Galactica and make sure they've got more SAR birds on the way, but we can go ahead and get started. Cherry, we're going to collect one of the pods - you guys stay in the area and make sure no more Raiders come out to play."
The last raiders go down and Farm Boy circles back around to meet up with the rest of the patrol group. "Technically, I was the one with my hands in her guts, Cherry..." Farm Boy calls out over the comm. There's a grin lacing his words.
"Copy that," Paige tells Webb. Then, she sets about raising the Galactica to request additional SAR birds to aid. "We are moving to assist," she says in conclusion to her request back to the battlestar. Then, to the Major she reports, "They're on their way." Finally, she attempts to raise the transport: "This is Raptor CO6 to civilian transport. We are on our way to assist. If any of you are still breathing over there, hang on. We're coming."
"Eyes forward, Twinkletoes." Viper's nose tilting upward to avoid any debris from what remains of the fourth raider, Roara leans back into her cockpit. She extends a gloved hand to flip switches ...y'know, as one will. Her viper circles, falling back into formation over Kazimir's wing.
"Been forward, Hammerhead." Kazimir responds as he glances over his shoulder and wing-waggles as Roara regroups on him as he turns his attention back to his flight and staying on patrol while the SAR arrives.
The crippled transport has begun launching escape pods as the SAR birds begin launching and recovery activities begin.
"Okay, okay! I admit it, you did everything, Farm Boy. Here I was, just trying to take some of the burden of being a hero off of your shoulders..." Cherry moves in to protect the operation, remaining alert despite the banter, and she won't return until after everyone one is safely away.
