Daughter of a Leonese loyalist and a Tauran ex-pat.
Grew up poor but fairly happy in the Sypra region of Sagittaron. Tensions and occasional violence between the Taurans, Leonese and local Sagitts aside.
Dreamed of becoming both a doctor and a Leonese citizen. Joined the Leonese Foreign Legion, but after a miserable deployment to Scorpia, spent most of her tour in the Oran Province, Sagittaron.
Left the Legion after the full three years, and though eligible for citizenship on Leonis, became a paramedic in the independent Sagittaran territory instead. Living through the Sypra coup as a civilian helped inform her decision to stay.
Met and is eventually engaged to a doctor devoted to full Sagittaran independence.
After the Cylon uprising, they both promptly join the Free Sagittaron Militia.
She volunteers for the Colonial Forces, convinced that the unity it represents will win the war.
So, Akeso's dad is a Sagittaran and her mom's a Tauran ex-pat and they live in Sypra region of Sagittaron. It's like Westside Story, but Tony and Maria get married and she's the result. The in-laws are at each others throats and nobody knows where she fits. So she calls herself a Sagitt and tries not to worry where her parents came from.
Her dad is a taxi driver by day, and an amateur philsopher by night who wants the Sypra region back under Leonese control. Her mother, a maid, and most of her mother's family are proudly Tauran ex-pats, they just happened to have to moved to the colony after the civil war. They're a rough and tumble bunch, more or less legit and not mafia crime bosses. The most successful being an uncle with a small construction firm.
Everything simmers in the background while Akeso grows up. As she becomes a teenager, she wants to be a doctor and help people, but money is tight and opportunities a bit slim for her to realize that dream. Things also deteriorate between her parents, and come apart entirely when his older brother (her uncle) is rounded up by the Tauran authorities on suspicion of being a terrorist. She refuses to help him and is tired of living in near poverty.
They separate. She rarely sees her father after that, but in the absence starts to think of him as a heroic figure. Her mom, herself and her siblings are all welcomed back to the fold as Taurans in exile and she continues schooling, still determined to be a doctor. If she'd wanted to be in the construction business, she would have been set, but she didn't. Worse, her head is filled with how much more wonderful the Leonese are thanks to her father.
When at 18 she's told there's no way she's going to med school, she sneaks off and joins the LFL. She thinks she's going to be a medic, do her three years, get her Leonese citizenship and become a doctor on fabulous Leonis, center of culture and all awesome things. But, it doesn't work out like that.
After brutal, illusion shattering training, she ends up a rifleman assigned to the 1st Foreign Calvary Regiment. And it's tough all over. Her Leonese is basic when she shows up and it slows her down. The unit is sent to Scorpia for some peacekeeping and the jungle is absolute murder. She winds up in the infirmary for two weeks after in a delerium. There are many regrets but she soldiers on.
When the 1er REC redeploys to Sagittaron, she's relieved. The climate is more to her liking, the terrain is familiar and she gets into the routine. She polishes her Leonese and the outfit mostly stays at a FOB, patrolling in LAVs and the like. She rotates through the duties like the rest, driver, gunner, etc. Everything is mostly peachy keen.
Then on one patrol, the lead vehicle goes off the road and flips, seriously injuring everyone inside and killing the gunner outright. She helps the medic tend to everyone, keeping the Major conscious until they can get an evac raptor in. She doesn't win a medal for it, but the not dead company CO is grateful enough that she has her sent her back for the medic training course. She takes to it like a fish to water, all her extracurricular studies paying off. When she gets back to the unit, the Oran civil war is in full swing. She sees a lot of bad stuff as the terrorists and paramilitaries viciously go at each other while they try to stand in the middle and keep it from getting completely out of control.
The rest of the tour is much the same. Patrol, patrol, patrol. Have some potshots taken at them, return fire, hump up the hill to see if they got anyone. Rest at the FOB, repeat. There's not many serious firefights, let alone battles, but she acquits herself well enough and competently provides medical aid when its needed. She earns regular promotions and picks up the Minouche nickname from the Captain she'd helped save. He thought it was funny.
When the three years are up, she has a ticket to Leonis but the Sypra coup erupts. She returns to her family and becomes the neighborhood unofficial peacekeeper when things get tense. She helps organize a local watch to keep everyone from murdering each other. In that role she's soon interacting daily with the ICPJK contingent when they arrive. It's then she realizes she can't up and leave her home for some other faraway colony, no matter how messed up it is.
When things cool down, she finds she still can't really afford medical school, so she settles for paramedic, thinking her army days are over. When she's done that, she finds a job as a paramedic for a hospital in the independent territory. That's where she meets and falls in love with a Sagitt doctor who's all about independence, helping the poor and revitalizing the Sagittaran language.
Things are pretty good, and then the Cylon uprising kicks off and ruins everything. The pair both join the FSM almost immediately, he gets a nice spot in the rear and she goes straight to the front. Her unit repulses a Cylon assault at Fayum and helps retake the hotly contested Zemmoura but fighting is tough (and there are more losses than victories). Supplies and gear are also in short supply, so she has to improvise a lot and forage/scrounge for nearly everything. The one bright spot is that she sees how it's bringing even former enemies together.
That's partly why when the Colonial Forces form she volunteers to serve, the other being the belief that unity is the only way to stop the Cylons. She's attached to Taskforce Manticore, Battlestar Athena and finally gets to see Leonis proper (even if sadly, it's on fire and crawling with toasters). She does a commendable job with the Marines there, enough that she's tapped for the Timber Wolves at the end of the Leonis operation.
There's something very feline about Akeso, with her small, lithe build, nimble, graceful movements and her wide, dark eyes. She has a habit of staring too, watching everything with an intense sort of mystery as though she's seeing beyond the surface of things. Her face is youthful, smoothly rounded and modestly attractive, if rather open, small of mouth and big of nose. Her expressions animate her features freely and fluidly, making her emotions often easy to read whether she wishes them to be or not. She keeps her hair straight and cut in a simple chin-length bob, in a rich, dark shade of brown that sets off the paleness of her even complexion.
She wears Colonial Forces duty khakis, with the darker shoulders and sergeant's rank pins on her collar. It doesn't differ much, save in size and pins, to any other marine's beyond that. The one other detail is that she almost always has a small pack with her, her medic kit, incase of emergency.
