Ines Correa was studying linguistics, law, and communication at university at the time of the Uprising, with an eye to international or even interplanetary diplomacy. The only daughter and eldest child of a wealthy Leonese family with a large estate in Montseny, she had a picture-perfect, somewhat obnoxious life: an overachiever in the academic department, the kind of girl who joins sororities and organizations left and right and still manages to find time to organize massive parties, rubbing elbows and networking with foreign students of note, dressed in something expensive selected from what was almost certainly a massive walk-in closet. Popular and bright, she was always a driven, hard-working young woman, but her areas of focus were for the most part privileged fluff.
The Uprising took her entire family from her. When the infrastructure for communications failed she left her university on foot and headed out into the chaos to try to make her way back to her family's estate. Both parents worked as engineers, and Montseny's status as a prime industrial target for the Cylons ensured that it saw some of the worst destruction and bloodiest fighting of those early days.
It seems impossible that someone so ill-equipped to survive a violent insurgency -- physically, mentally, and through dearth of any experience with actual hardship -- somehow managed to do just that, alone and unprepared, for nearly a month, but that's exactly what she did. However well-liked she may have been, she would have almost universally been expected by her peers to collapse immediately under the stress of violence, the hardship of malnourishment and exposure, and the destruction of the world she knew and understood best. She didn't. She turned up after that month on the doorstep of a Foreign Legion outpost, too thin, bruised, shock-quiet, and alive. Upon recovery she immediately enlisted in the Navy, picked piloting from amongst a host of choices just because she'd loved, once upon a time, driving powerful street vehicles...cars, motorcycles. The rush of that, and freedom of it.
The military gave her decimated life structure again. Training restored to her a very necessary feeling of control. She thrived, though there was some question early on as to whether or not she'd be able to deal with the grim realities of combat, given her personality and tendency to feel things deeply.
Those worries were needless. In the time since she began training she has distinguished herself as a pilot through her unshakable self-mastery even in a crisis situation. Her courage in combat borders on fearlessness, and seems terribly at odds with everything else about her. Nevertheless, it made her a strong candidate to become part of the Timber Wolves -- and thus began this latest of her life's chapters.
Young blood, run like a river
Young blood, never get chained
Young blood, heaven need a sinner
You can't raise hell with a saint
Young blood, came to start a riot
Don't care what your old man say
Young blood, heaven hate a sinner
But we gonna raise hell anyway
You blink once, then it's gone
Don't let it take the skin from your bones
It's darkest before the dawn
But you don't need to do this alone
Cause when you get this close
You can feel the heat
Now you're so afraid
Of what's underneath, oh
Even if it hurts
Even if it makes me bleed
I'm gonna carry you
With the dirt on my sleeves
Even if it hurts
Even if it's razor deep
I'm not giving up
Not gonna run
I'll be there when you need me
Even if it hurts
Sparkle Pony Party:
And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around
All of his questions such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
'Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn
And you can see my heart beating
You can see it through my chest
That I'm terrified, but I'm not leaving
I know that I must pass this test
So just pull the trigger
Whatever It Was:
Oh, the storm clouds were moving across your eyes, and I
Could hear the war drums pounding from inside your mind, so I
Gave up my life for love, but it still was not enough
But it still was not enough
But it still was not enough
My heart shattered apart with your sanity, but I won't leave
The stars have scattered across a haunted galaxy, please
Hold on through heaven and hell, hold onto each other
Or I fear we won't recover
On your side, on your...
I'm still on your side
On your side...
I'm still on your...
Jump-start the innocent parts that once dared to dream, before
The spark diminishes from the life you're meant to lead, are you
Gonna let it burn out, are you gonna let it
Like many other Wolves, Ines lets momentum and a lack of any other clear direction carry her to the specops school. It's a shocking advancement for someone of her limited experience, and there are occasional (quiet) whispers that the awards that guaranteed her entry were primarily earned by someone else in every case and therefore a dubious justification -- Tomak got her out of the blackout zone, she didn't /really/ participate in the raid on the mine, Hunter King was the one who /really/ hotwired the Heavy Raider, she said so herself, etcetera -- but in much the same way she beat the odds to get through basic training, she pulls through her handful of months with sufficient competence to put those whispered doubts to rest. When they turn her loose she requests to join a unit (VFA-33, 'Nightfall') at a high-risk posting on Leonis, close to the cylon-occupied city where she was born. No one is surprised by the request. She's never quite the same after the Wolves are dissolved -- or maybe it's a side-effect of her time on Picon. Either way, the difficulty of the post and the hardness of her fellow pilots seems to suit her.
From time to time, the unit rotates back to Arcadia.
And any bird that dares to fly in the bullet-ridden sky
Is not dainty
And any fish that could survive in the open oil lines
Is not tasty
And that's what I read
So, should I doubt what I read?
And that's why I'm asking you
Help me understand the truth
If you know
All smiles, I know what it takes to fool this town
I'll do it 'til the sun goes down and all through the night time
Oh yeah, I'll tell you what you wanna hear
Leave my sunglasses on while I shed a tear
It's never the right time, yeah
I put my armor on, show you how strong how I am
I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am
I'm a Porsche with no brakes
Yeah, I win every single game
I'm so powerful
I don't need batteries to play
I'm so confident, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
But I never really was the purest one
Though I try to cleanse my soul with every sun
And I just get deeper in the same shit -- doesn't everyone?
Close my eyes and play along
'Cause I am a tempted girl
This is a candied world
And it spreads like fire and when it devours me I call the
"Good 'nough for Scorpia. Not for Leonis."
They got off on the wrong foot for reasons she's never entirely understood, and she's never asked. Their conversations since then have been a little less fraught, but Astraea has clearly got her demons to fight, and Ines, with a suite of her own to box, is starting to suspect it might be best to leave well enough alone.
"Please! I just heard last night! You had already fallen to sleep and-and--and I wanted to give you the good news. Dirk says she has amnesia, she totally forgot about kissing me and that you put her in the coma. Please Iris. She's awake!!"
Irene's wingman on (and off of) flights. Quirky and theatrical. Between she and Irene, C bunk's charisma stat must be outlandishly high. Ines has flown with her enough now to trust her implicitly, and there's a growing trust on the ground, too: it would have been easy for Ines to feel like a third wheel on a vacation with Faye and Irene, but she never did. That's as much owed to Faye as to Irene or her parents, and in spite of her exasperation when it comes to the ladies insisting on meddling in her nonexistent private life, she'd put up with that and a whole lot more from Faye. It's been a lot time since anyone made her feel so welcome.
"I was wondering just where you had ended up. Just idly curious. Not creeper levels of curious."
It was years ago that Ines met Hunter -- early on in the war, when she was still striving to get her wings and barely acquainted with the pilot's seat of a Raptor. Now he's been transferred to the Wolves, an unexpected splinter of the past suddenly shot into her new orbit, like shrapnel. For reasons that have nothing at all to do with who he is and everything to do with who she isn't anymore, his presence seems likely to be...difficult.
"Oooooh. Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
She's got a contagious presence and a whole bundle of qualities that Ines likes in other people: sharp, laid back, adventurous, inclusive and a little bit goofy. The potential for mischief in this association is immense. Irene may never know just how much it meant to Ines to be invited to Virgon with Faye to see Irene's home, and while it's disconcerting for Ines to feel her interior life being prised open again to expose all of the rusty, rattled mechanisms of a years-defunct social life, she can hardly help herself. The friendliness: it's insidious.
"I'll be the one pulling stupid stunts when I get bored."
Her callsign's Deathwish.
Not sure if want.
"He probably thinks you're a lavette. You'll need to wrestle him to assert dominance."
Basically a stranger, but a stranger with outstanding delivery.
"Depends, is she the shy bookwarm type, or the crazy suicidal type? Some of these Viper jocks are almost as tough as Marines. Almost."
Doesn't like Capricans. Good at formulating casus belli. Definitely trouble, but then what else should anybody expect from a guy who seems thick as thieves with someone like Tomak?
"I don't know pilots. Dunno how they pick 'em. But the Wolves are a family and you're a part of it now."
One half of the reason Ines probably isn't getting as much sleep in the bunkroom as she would like, but she's got interesting stories to tell, and in spite of being one of the best marksmen in all of the CF she took the time to show a pilot what was wrong with her firing stance. She didn't even laugh. (Out loud, anyway.)
"I was hoping you'd be our break through for bombarding the toasters with penis enlargement ads. Y'know, 'Cyber Warfare' or something."
He's got really weird ideas about what constitutes cyber warfare. He also has the hookup on things you roll into joints, so it's probably a wash. Jury's still out on that moustache, though.
"FRAK. Frakkity, frak, frak, frak, FRAK."
Her callsign is Trash Panda. Is that a weird reason to like somebody you don't really know yet..?
"I've got a viper jock for a new bunkmate. Bets on how long she lasts in with us marines?"
"Magical as frak out here."
All Ines really knows about him is this: he's not a killjoy. It matters.
"Let's just say I know a thing or two about dealing with people bigger and heavier than me, which for us is what? Sixty-five percent of the population, give or take fast food sales?"
Funny, sharp, tough. She survived a lengthy MIA and came back ready to keep on fighting. There's a lot to admire in that. She also took Ines seriously when she didn't have to, and it would have been easy not to. For reasons she cannot possibly know about, that gesture secured a hefty credit line for her with the Bank of Ines.
"EVERY color is my color."
He tried very hard to defuse a fight before it got started, and Ines appreciated that. But it didn't work, and when it came time to fight he stuck around and put down his opponent with equal parts mercy and authority. She appreciated that, too.
"And Marines laugh every times Pilots climb into the cockpit too. Especially when they didn't check to see if the canopy was open first."
Someone even newer to the Wolves than Ines is. She has very strong opinions about coffee.
"Do not worry. You would not be here if someone didn't think you deserved it."
There are other doctors and most of them have been with the Wolves longer than Sarita, but Sarita is the only one Ines knows well enough to pin with the vaunted appellation 'The,' capital 'T.' Survived a little outing in a rental car on Caprica with Ines and lived to tell the tale -- or at least lie about it. They lost the race, but good luck getting them to admit that.
Ines Correa stands five feet and seven inches tall in bare feet, naturally slender in build but athletic in the way that soldiers must be to survive military life. She has a striking face, with high cheekbones, a clean-cut jawline, large eyes and a generous mouth, all of which are necessary to counterbalance brows that would be too strong were they set against any other suite of features. Her complexion is natively olive but trends toward fairness, her eyes a muted color that wanders between quiet greens and blues, and her hair is long, brown and wavy barring efforts to straighten it, subtly threaded with lighter highlights that seem more like the product of sunlight than a salon.

2239-03-10 - Distractions
One year later...
2238-03-18 - The End
They escaped the factory behind enemy lines, the winter woods of Picon and the cylon sympathizer living therein, the warehouse, the privations of hunger and exposure, the danger of sepsis, the airstrip of the labor camp at the mine and the besieged ranch, the threat of their own uncertainties and reservations and their uneasiness about what they were becoming, Whatever That Was -- always keeping an eye on the future. For threats, and also in some trepidation about the dangers of hope. And in the end, it wasn't the future they should've worried about. They escaped all of those things, but they couldn't escape the past.
2238-03-04 - The Things We Can't Fix

The ever-escalating prank war between two residents of C Berth is getting a little bit out of hand. Literally. As in, it shoots across the room, covered in almond oil. Gage takes it to the chest, but in the end the only casualties are Correa's dignity and any hope of a truce.
