Coming from a small family in the projects of New Castor, a large metropolis on Hibernia, Jacob’s parents, Daniel and Claire were a pipefitter and teacher, respectively. His mother had been a part of the Virgon aristocracy and set it all aside to marry a poor welder from the moon. The fact that his mother's family had all but disowned her for it, gave their marriage a romantic air. While they never had a great deal of money, theirs was a happy life.
Their firstborn child was a daughter, Jena, their second, born two years later, was Jacob. Jacob would have only a handful of memories of his mother, though they would be good ones. There would have certainly been many more, if the drunk driver had hit the lamp post instead of Claire's car as she was coming home from work. With her loss, it was up to Daniel to raise a pair of children on his own with only one meager salary.
Things for the small family were that much harder after Claire’s passing. Jena, in particular, went into a rebellious phase she never really grew out of. Jacob, in contrast, became devoted to his father, even going so far as to make boxing, their favorite hobby together, his priority since he had shown a talent for the sport. After a particularly nasty spat of arguments between father and daughter, Jena left the family home and made her way to Virgon. Jacob never saw her again.
As the years passed, Jacob, finding he had a real talent for the sport, gave serious consideration to making a professional career of boxing. During his time on the amateur boxing circuit, he was 10-2, with 8 won by knock-out and two by decision. Daniel, immensely proud of his son, had never missed a single match. And for the eighteen-year-old, seeing his father happy again was a reward in itself.
The trouble with making a name for yourself in the ring on Hibernia, of course, was the likelihood that it would attract the wrong sort of attention. Just so, for Jacob. The Hibernian crime family that owned much of the underworld of New Castor, led by Robert 'Two-Shakes' McCree had been known to buy up and coming fighters. They approached Jacob, offering him quite a bit of money to 'fight for them'. Just a nice way of saying that they would tell him when to take a fall in a match. Jacob, very carefully, declined the offer, but as a result, to avoid further strong-arming by the criminal element, set aside his dream of professional boxing with his father’s blessing. What money he lost from his departure from the circuit, he made up as a trainer, moving into a position at the same gym he had spent most of his life training at. Coupled with other various and sundry part-time work, he managed to maintain a steady income without having to resort to the violence or drug-trade, simply known locally as 'The Hustle'.
Jacob and his father lived comfortably for a number of years before Daniel, now in his early retirement, was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of lymphoma. The cost of the treatments that might buy them a few more years together far exceeded their savings, or any money that Jacob could earn from legitimate work. Weighing his need to buy his father some more precious time, Jacob finally turned to the only enterprise likely to offer him the funds that he needed. He found himself approaching the mob for a loan, to be repaid in kind. Robert McCree agreed to such a loan, and remembering the young man’s skill in the ring, brought him in as an enforcer for the element of the family that handled the ‘protection’ racket in New Castor. It was soul-crushing work, and he left quite a few lives shattered in his wake. After about a year and half under contract, he was able to pay off money he owed, a debt he had never openly discussed with Daniel, and McCree, a man of his word, let Jacob out of his service.
Jacob had bought Daniel enough time to enjoy his final years with his son, and the two were inseparable until he finally passed of his cancer when Jacob was 24. Now finally alone on Hibernia, Jacob had to pick the pieces up and move on. There was nothing left for him in New Castor.
Although it had never been his first choice, the Virgon military offered a way out of the projects of New Castor.
Although there were a goodly number of Hibernians who enlisted to escape the hopelessness of the moon, Jacob was rare, in that he had his ties and sympathy to the rebellion barely existed. That fact alone would ensure that once he had finished basic training and and recon training school, he was pulled before his first station assignment. He was sent to a training base on Virgon itself, and coached in the art of collecting ‘human intelligence’. HUMINT, as it was known, was a natural drug for the former fighter. It was the legitimate side of the coin of the underworld. The operation was put forth to him. It was suggested that he might still 'know people' in the old neighborhood which he could use to make an 'in' to various elements within the rebellious factions that peppered New Castor. His background and upbringing, and the fact that he was Hibernia made him an apt choice. Though he had come reluctant to the military, he had come to see his service as honourable, and he agreed, feeling like it was his duty to do so.
There are very few facts available, that cover what exactly the young marine did, during the six months he was on assignment. What can be gleaned is that, possible, he was involved in trying to identify and take down the leaders of the rebellion. Whatever the facts were about his time there, one thing was immediately clear. What had been a positive and upbeat man who believed in the military, came back wracked with guilt and self-recrimination. He didn’t seem to blame the military, though was often hard on himself. ‘It was his choice’, he commonly said from atop a mug of beer. ‘I can’t blame the military for giving me tools. I have to blame myself for choosing to use them’.
Rather than looking to settle into long-term duty assignments, Jacob opted to bounce from station to station. He kept few friends close, and was known to enjoy the occasional night of overindulgence. The one bright spot in this new trajectory was his boxing career, which he picked back up in the military, winning two Golden Gloves, earning him back the reputation he had had as a young amateur.
When the Cylon uprising began, Jacob was on Virgon stationed at one of their military bases when the call went out for battle alert. The man would spend a full year moving from hotspot to hotspot, taking part in brutal combat that went block by block, street by street, city by city. This on the ground, on the front lines experience would serve him well. When the call came for the formation of the Colonial Forces, he received his transfer orders to the serve aboard the Galactica. He remained aboard the Galactica for two months, before being reassigned to the Athena. Jacob was pulled by Taskforce: Manticore shortly after his arrival to the battle star. He was commanded to oversee a HUMINT/Recon squad doing support services for the heavy marine elements the Athena brought to bare. During the initiatives brought on by the task force, Jacob spent nearly all of his time planet side, hard fighting and lazing targets for air strikes. The service earned him a choice of assignment. For reasons the staff sergeant kept to himself, the only four words to come out of his mouth, when asked, were 'Whoever needs me most'.
Close cropped, chestnut brown hair and crisp blue eyes are this man’s two most remarkable features. Thick, expressive brows frame those eyes, his nose, narrow and unmarred by any evidence of a break, are a contrast to a full, sensual mouth. His skin carries a natural tan, and a this jagged line of scar tissue mars his right cheek. Standing at a neat 6’2”, his build is toned, muscled as might befit a boxer, heavy through the shoulders, arms and chest, trimmer in the waist, hips and through the legs.
Jacob is dressed in Colonial Marines fatigues. The khaki shirt is tucked into matching trousers, which are in turn bloused into black combat boots. A softer, darker brown fabric decorates the shoulders of the shirt, and quick clips secure two large pockets on the front of the shirt. The pins on his collars show a rank of Staff Sergeant.
