Supplemental Information

Noah Westlake came out of the foster system on Caprica. At four years of age he was adopted by a couple having difficulty conceiving, and for a decade his life with them could have made him the poster child for Foster Care Happy Endings: they formed a close-knit family, albeit one solidly beneath the glass ceiling dividing middle and upper-middle class income brackets. His adoptive parents — his father a construction foreman in Caprica City, his mother a waitress in an upscale restaurant — did all they could to provide him with opportunities better than their own, particularly when it became clear that Noah had a remarkable aptitude with electronics, machinery, and most mathematics. Two of his science fair projects in middle-grade drew modest regional attention for their ambitious scope, and it was generally thought that he'd apply for scholarships at technical schools well before graduating high school.

That was not to be. A worksite accident shattered one of the vertebrae in his father's back when Noah was just about to enter high school, effectively ending his father's career and placing the burden of financial responsibility for the family on his mother. When she began to develop arthritis in her knees, that source of income was threatened, too, and Noah did what most coming-of-age kids in a situation like that one do: he went to work. Throughout high school he worked at a garage in his neighborhood; upon graduation a referral from one of his math teachers got his foot in the door for a QA testing position with a locally-based engineering firm specializing in robotics for use in zero-gravity environments. For the next seven years he worked his way up from that most basic position to eventually performing as a technician alongside their electromechanical engineers — a job description that often involved testing and prototyping in zero-gravity. He socked away what little money was left after paying for family expenses, including increasing numbers of medical bills for his mother's worsening condition, and told himself he'd advance his education whenever there was enough cushion to mitigate his exit from the workforce.

It was on board one of the laboratory vessels used for testing products designed by the firm that Noah witnessed the first volleys of violence on the day of the Uprising, from the sudden explosion of combat on the ground to the chaos in orbit as Cylons compromised network security on countless vessels. Had the engineers he was working with not insisted on maintaining a low network profile while iterating products, it's likely the lab ship would have been one of the many, many casualties that day.

All of Noah's plans related to pursuing a degree were destroyed along with vast swaths of Caprican metropolis and any hope of peace in the colonies. He enlisted in the Marines at the age of twenty-eight, and in addition to his primary training as a rifleman he put his years in the garage to good use, training to work as a mechanic on the vehicles used by marine infantry in the Caprican Navy.

His transfer to the Wolves arrives as something of a surprise, but he's generally viewed as having The Right Stuff: easy to get along with and sharp as a tack, he's a quick study with new information and a soldier deeply committed to the cause. If asked, he'd say that the greasy, sweaty, very basic maintenance work on the rough-and-tumble vehicles of the CF is more important than anything he could be doing in robotics.

Hold On I'm Coming, Welshly Arms

Don't you ever be sad
Oh lean on me when times get bad
When the day comes and you are down
In a river of trouble and about to drown

Well just hold on
I'm coming

Walk, Foo Fighters

Do you remember the days
We built these paper mountains
Then sat and watched them burn?
I think I found my place
Can't you feel it growing stronger
Little conquerors?

Butterflies and Hurricanes, Muse

Change everything you are
And everything you were
Your number has been called
Fights and battles have begun
Revenge will surely come
Your hard times are ahead

Way Down We Go, Kaleo

'Cause they will run you down, down til the dark
Yes and they will run you down, down til you fall
And they will run you down, down til you go
Yeah so you can't crawl no more
And way down we go

C'mon, Panic At The Disco + Fun.

If I should die tonight
May I first just say I'm sorry
For I never felt like anybody
I am a man of many hats although I
Never mastered anything
But I am ten feet tall
I've never felt this tall since the fall
Nobody seems to know my name
So don't leave me to sleep all alone
May we stay lost on our way home

C'mon, c'mon, with everything falling down around me
I'd like to believe in all the possibilities

Relationships
Abigail
Abigail

She and Tomak are two peas in a pod, seems like. Peas shaped like grenades. She thinks ahead outside of combat - not a standard-issue trait in marines. Kind of refreshing.

Akeso
Akeso

She recently got shot in the head and didn't die. You know, just in case she wasn't scary enough already. Between the Leonese accent and the fact that I'm 60-80% sure she's a serial killer, she has a whole lot of 'confusing boner' potential.

Cate

Talk about having it rough. Her luck's even worse than Wagner's, somehow. Smuggled some food into Sickbay for me, though. Probably owe her for that.

Charlie
Charlie

Catches even more bullets than I do. I thought recon were supposed to be tough to spot, Chuck?

Gage
Gage

His grudge is intense, but not intense enough to make him impossible to deal with. It's fine. Really into blowing stuff up. Who doesn't like explosions? I'm almost jealous.

Gustavo
Gustavo

This man is built like a brick shithouse. I like having him on my squad because I know there'll be somebody on it who can drag me out when I inevitably get shot in the chest again. (Can I stop getting shot in the chest, though? That'd be great.)

Nicole
Nicole

Not a bad partner to have on the ground. She keeps a level head and an inventory of wound glue, so...what more do you need, honestly?

System Information
  • Greasemonkey - Noah helps to maintain the rarely-used fleet of vehicles used by the marines. Anybody involved in similar work is going to have overlap with him eventually.
  • Nerd In Jock's Clothing - Noah is a marine. He looks like a marine. He feels like a marine. He probably smells like a marine. He also sounds like a marine right up until somebody makes the mistake of engaging him about one of the more academic things he's interested in, and then...
  • Physical - Sports, physical challenges, the gym -- he always seems to have energy to burn, and he likes to stay active.
  • Easily Bored - And he can't stand boredom. Bored Noahs are game for almost anything that relieves the boredom, for better or worse.
  • Reputation - He's got a reputation for womanizing and being dodgy on commitment, but it doesn't seem to hold up to intense scrutiny.

Six foot and four inches tall, broad-shouldered and long-limbed, like many marines Noah has the unyielding physique of an athlete, though he trends more toward chisel than bulk. He carries himself with an easy swagger and pervasive awareness of his own body, more a kind of self-control and finesse in movement than any kind of grace. Strong, angular features and a square, hard-cut jaw conspire to create a slyly expressive face, its character dominated by a couple of days' growth of stubble and sharp hazel eyes. He wears his hair in a short, slightly messy style, just long enough on the top to be swept up and out of his face in a tousle of brown and blond. A tawny complexion, calluses on deft hands, and the odd, occasionally visible scar all pair with his build to make plain that he lives a life that is anything but sedentary.
