Van has shown that he likes to stick to the regs, including keeping his uniform tidy and saluting properly.
Van was part of the first dogfight involving forces from the Galactica, and assisted in the destruction of two of the Raiders.
Van is one of the first two pilots aboard Galactica to make ace status solely on kills with the Colonial Forces, and has now made quadruple Colonial Ace.
Van approaches many of the younger pilots after their first combat, or after a particularly difficult combat to check in on them.
Van usually flies more conservatively than other Viper jocks, doing his best not to push beyond the envelope of his fighter.
Solid man, solid pilot. Reliable in the cockpit and out.
Solid pilot, good shot. I feel a little safer when Isolde is with Soundbite, but I'm not certain why, as Nova is quite competent.
It is sometimes odd to me just how many celebrities are among the Timber Wolves, but she has certainly earned her place. Unfortunately, she seems to take after Cherry and Farmboy in the cockpit.
I'd call her a "good kid," but she has as much flying experience as me outside of combat, and has fast proven herself excellent in combat. I'm happy to have her flying with Isolde.
Sharp, antagonistic, quick to assume. But she's a good pilot. Quite good. A bit of a wild woman with a stick.
Good in a dogfight, conscientious of his wing, and shows that Aerilons can be technically capable. If only he flew a little more under control.
My wife. It's still a new title, but I wouldn't trade the feeling for anything.
A conscientious and skilled pilot. He's had a hard run of it, but I know he's a trustworthy wingman and a good friend.
I'm thankful that she has been able to help Isolde out. I think that having a fellow ECO to practice with has done her well.
It might be good to have a Raptor pilot as a CAG for a while, someone calm and cool. She seems to keep her head well under fire.
She may have the worst luck under the Gods, but she has persevered wonderfully under its weight. I trust her, and not simply due to shared experiences at Triton.
A good, solid officer. Serious and sober. That's a very good thing in a doctor as far as I'm concerned.
A good man, the right amount of starch, the right amount of fire. He was the leader we needed to get the Wolfpack off the ground. I hope he recovers quickly.
Solid man, talented pilot. His experience should have been a boon to the Vipers in the Wolfpack.
I don't know if having love again and losing it was better or worse for Cate.
I do not know if he's trying too hard, or just too brittle, but he failed the squadron. I hope that he gets an opportunity to just fly, as he is a skilled pilot.
Van Newton's mother, Lorraine, is the long-time mayor of the small town in southern Picon where he grew up, and his father, William, was a systems technician officer (Lieutenant) in the Picon Navy before he retired. Van has an elder brother (Dean) who is a lawyer, an elder sister (Monique) who died at the Colonies' Fair, a younger sister (Faye) who is an aspiring actress (and currently a waitress), and a younger brother (Cooper) just starting at the (newly re-established in Queenstown) Picon Naval Academy.
Despite his mother's political connections, the children all had relatively normal upbringings -- Van particularly enjoyed time on the little sloop the family had, as well as computer science classes in school. As he got older and developed an interest in the opposite sex, he took to social dance as a way to woo the ladies. When Van expressed an interest in following his father into the service early in high school, Lorraine offered to use her political connections to get him a spot at the Picon Naval Academy. Instead, Van stated that if he couldn't get in on his own merits, he didn't want to get in at all -- and he set out to get in on his own merits, studying for hours and participating in extracurriculars like Sailing Club and even a few flight lessons. By the time he graduated (in the top 10 percent of his class), he had an acceptance letter from the Academy in hand.
Life at the Academy was hard, but living in the center of Hyperion was exciting. Although Van's degree is in Software Engineering, he continued his study of dance and got high marks in (space) naval tactics courses. But it was flying that truly called to him, and he took the necessary preliminary courses to qualify for flight school -- as well as getting his civilian pilot's license during his first year (his first term, in fact).
In 2233, immediately after graduation (somewhere in the top third of his class, but nothing outstanding), he applied for posting to Flight School and was granted it. There it became clear that he was a born pilot. He graduated with honors, and was immediately posted to the Inter-Colonial Joint Peacekeeping Taskforce as a Raptor pilot in order to demonstrate the quality of pilots Picon was putting out.
In the ICJPK, he was posted to Sagittaron, flying Raptor CAP over ground patrols. When he complained of all the milk-runs, his Picon-born commanding officer (Riley Goff) told him, "Better get used to them, because it looks like you're going to be a Milkman the rest of your days." To Van's disgust, the callsign stuck.
After a year-long tour flying over Sagittaron, Van was rotated back to Picon and trained up on the Viper at Riley's recommendation. He had just been assigned to his squadron at PNAB Triton as a Viper jockey when the Cylons hit Hyperion. Van was one of those caught in the midst of the invasion, holed up at Triton and doing the best he could to save as many civilians as he could by knocking down Cylon-piloted Vipers. He certainly wasn't flying milk-runs anymore. Van got four confirmed kills, but trashed two Vipers during the same time. He had just trashed his third, crashing the damaged bird where it could be salvaged for parts and (mostly) walking away from the wreckage when the final Cylon attack on Triton began. Despite his wounds, he ended up flying a Raptor full of refugees to friendly territory, landing and getting everyone out before passing out from bloodloss.
For his part in the defense of Triton (and his time in grade), Van was promoted to Lieutenant J.G. in early 2236, and when Galactica rolled out of the docks, he was assigned to the newly-formed Colonial Fleet, Task Force Phoenix, Battlestar Galactica, and VF-102 The Wolfpack. It means he gets more chances to kill Cylons, so he's just fine with that.
Van Newton seems to have come through the horrific events of Hyperion alright, generally exhibiting a calm, cool demeanor, but there is something brittle about it as well, like thick sea ice just waiting to shatter. He's been more than a little traumatized by his experiences at PNAB Triton, and if his impressive self-control ever truly cracks, it could put him out of commission for some time.
This lean man could be anywhere from his mid twenties to early thirties. Putting an age to him is complicated by the fact that his face seems have been pared down to the bare essentials--his cheeks are hollow beneath high cheekbones, leading down to a narrow jawline and a rounded, clean-shaven chin. Despite his apparent youth, he has a strong widow's peak, easily visible with his rich mahogany hair, dark brown with just the slightest hint of red. His hair is clipped short, a little too short to actually do much with, but short enough that he doesn't have to. His eyes are a medium gray, untinted by blue or green, his brows thick and mobile, his skin a smooth tanned almond, and his nose is straight and narrow. It is not an unfortunate face, but neither is it one would call more than mildly handsome, for all that it fits his lean frame and strictly average height well.
Van wears the blues of the Colonial Forces, the double-breasted jacket close around his swimmer's build, the mandarin collars high along his long neck. The turned-back cuffs are kept meticulously clear of stains or creases, and the brass buttons, his junior pilot qualification wings, and the triangle-in-diamond of his Lieutenant's insignia gleam at the edge of the crossed-over flap of his jacket, his left breast, and his collar respectively. The Dauntless patch on his left arm is precisely aligned and kept clear of any smudging. His blue pants do, in fact, have the creases starched into them, and his shoes are polished to the point where faint reflections of passing people can be seen in them.
